Girls' basketball

Goldsboro 59, Southern Nash 42

* Goldsboro closed the second quarter on an 8-0 run and never looked back in a 59-42, non-conference win over Southern Nash inside Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium on Monday evening.

The Cougars scored 14 unanswered points to start the game, but the Firebirds used 10-0 run to pull to within 14-10 in the second quarter.

Goldsboro closed the first half with eight straight points and led 29-19 at the half. Brandy Johnson scored 16 of her team-high 20 points in the second half. Kasheika Wallace provided 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Alexus Myles had 10 points.

The Cougars (5-1 overall) visit North Lenoir on Wednesday.

Harrells Christian 38,

W. Country Day 35 (OT)

* Senior guard Haley Wachter drained two game-clinching free throws with 5.1 seconds left in overtime, and Harrells Christian upended previously-unbeaten Wayne Country Day, 38-35.

The Chargers suffered their first loss in seven outings this season.

WCDS scored the game's first 12 points, only to see Harrells (4-0) battle to a 14-14 tie just before halftime. The Chargers led 19-16 at the break and fell behind by six points twice in the third quarter.

Catherine Ford's steal and layup, and Sarah Best's 3-pointer off Kim Martell's assist forged a 32-32 tie midway through the final period.

Morgan Massengill, who had 12 points and blocked six shots, got fouled on a go-ahead basket with 50.8 seconds left in regulation. Massengill missed the free throw and Martell knotted the game at 34-34 with two free throws six seconds later.

Each team missed chances to win before overtime.

Martell's free throw gave WCDS its last lead, 35-34, early in the extra session. Massengill drained the go-ahead basket and Wachter sealed the road win at the free throw line.

The Chargers misfired on their final nine possessions of overtime and committed three crucial turnovers. Two miscues led to all four Crusader points.

"The frustrating thing is we had the looks (at the basket) and we knew they were going to overplay Cat," said WCDS head coach Eric Perry. "We had the duck in (against the 2-3 zone) and made bad passes. We practice bounce passes because you cannot throw a chest pass through a zone.

"We just threw the ball away."

Ford and Best led the Chargers with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Ford, Martell, Hannah Pearson and Mack Thompson pulled down seven rebounds apiece. Best and Ford each dished out three assists.

Northern Nash 41, C.B. Aycock 39

* RED OAK -- Northern Nash scored the game-winning basket with five seconds to play and sank Charles B. Aycock 41-39 on Monday night.

Ivy Hartzell led the Golden Falcons with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Kelby Dumond added 12 points in the defeat.

C.B. Aycock entertains Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival North Lenoir tonight.

Lakewood 52, North Duplin 20

* ROSEBORO -- North Duplin never found its shooting touch in a 52-20, non-conference loss to Lakewood on Monday night.

Angelica Favela paced the Rebels with eight points. Danielle Hinrichs added six points in the defeat.

North Duplin (0-4 overall) travels to Lejeune on Wednesday.

Boys' basketball

Faith Christian 58, Bethel Christian 47

* KINSTON -- Faith Christian opened up a double-digit lead in the opening quarter and never looked back en route to a 58-47 win over N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A rival Bethel Christian on Monday night.

Aaron Hill led the Conquerors with 18 points. Wes Caudle added 16 markers in the win.

Faith Christian (6-4) entertains Trinity-Greenville on Jan. 4, 2011.

Northern Nash 74, C.B. Aycock 44

* RED OAK -- C.B. Aycock never overcame a slow offensive start in a 74-44 loss to Northern Nash on Monday night. The Knights opened up a 25-point lead before halftime.

Brandon Winford led the Golden Falcons with 14 points. Derrick Lofton added eight points.

C.B. Aycock (1-6 overall) plays host to Eastern Carolina 3-A foe North Lenoir today.

North Duplin 73, Lakewood 69

* ROSEBORO -- North Duplin scored 26 points in the fourth quarter and completed a hard-fought 73-69, comeback victory over Lakewood on Monday night.

Marcus Kornegay and Breyon Johnson scored 20 points apiece for the Rebels. Devin Oliver added 12 points.

North Duplin (2-2 overall) visits Lejeune on Wednesday.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 55, Southern Nash 27 -- Quaviis Holloman led the Cougars with 15 points. Jamaal George finished with 14 points. Rodney Cook and Kerron Howell each had seven points. Goldsboro (5-1) travels to North Lenoir on Wednesday.

* Boys' basketball: Northern Nash 32, C.B. Aycock 25 -- Michael Williams led the Golden Falcons with 11 points. C.B. Aycock dropped to 6-1 overall.

* Girls' basketball: Northern Nash 45, C.B. Aycock 24 -- Raquelle Lawrence led the Golden Falcons with 13 points. C.B. Aycock will host North Lenoir tonight.

Middle schools

* Girls' basketball: Brogden 24, Spring Creek 2 -- Jasmine Covington paced the Brogden offense with 16 points. The Rams play host to Norwayne on Thursday.

* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 35, Eastern Wayne 29 -- Myleah Jones led the Cobras with 15 points. Taylor Daniels added 11 points in the win. Eastern Wayne was paced by Meagan Mozingo's 11-point outing. Norwayne (6-1 overall) is the guest of Brogden on Thursday.
