Charles B. Aycock falls to Northern Nash

PIKEVILLE -- Brandon Winford did everything he could to keep Charles B. Aycock in the game against Northern Nash on Tuesday night.

Winford's 19-point, nine-rebound effort was not enough.

The Knights came out firing and held off a late surge for a 58-44, non-conference victory.

"We know pretty much what Brandon is going to bring to the table every night," said Golden Falcons head coach Steve Moats. "He was good again tonight, but overall I thought our shot selection was poor."

The Golden Falcons did not connect on a single 3-point attempt in the first half.

Northern Nash had no such problems. Darius Freeman canned back-to-back three's from the corner off a set inbounds play and extended the Knights' lead to18-12 after one quarter. Another long ball from Freeman pushed the Knights out to a seven-point lead at the half.

The third quarter featured more spirited effort from both squads as play got physical underneath. Winford scored six points in the period, but was matched by Northern Nash freshman Kendrick Richardson shot-for-shot.

"This is the fourth consecutive school night that we have had a game and I think that showed," said Moats. "I liked our effort in the second half, but it took us a while to get going. I also saw a lot of the same mistakes that we have been making in previous games. Hopefully with a few days of practice we can fix those things."

The Knights faltered briefly in the middle of the fourth quarter when a basket by Winford, a technical foul and a e-pointer by C.B. Aycock guard Randall Fulghum closed the gap to 52-44. Knights sharpshooter Richard Brackett answered with a shot from behind the arc with just over two minutes to play and sealed the game.

Freeman led the Knights with 19 points. Richardson added 16 points and nine rebounds.

Fulghum finished with 10 points for the Golden Falcons, while A.J. Mundle added six points.

C.B. Aycock (1-5 overall) opens its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference schedule Friday at Triton.
