PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock played its best match of the season.
Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Eastern Wayne had little to say about it.
The Golden Falcons posted a 25-11, 25-16, 25-14 win in just 58 minutes on Wednesday night. The home team left little doubt as they jumped out to an early lead in the first set.
Outside hitter Connor Davis tallied three kills as Aycock opened up a 15-5 lead. Madison Mercer added two kills down the stretch and sealed the victory.
"I don't really know what to say, other than Aycock played one heck of a match," said Eastern Wayne head coach Tony Parrish. "I think we might have had a little hangover coming off a big win on our senior night, but that is no excuse."
The visitors battled to a 14-14 tie in the second set. Behind three aces by Kendra Nash the Warriors put their best foot forward. Undaunted, the Golden Falcons battled back and won the set on the strength of two more kills by Mercer.
"We hit the ball well tonight on the attack," said C.B. Aycock head coach Davis Harris. "Rachel Jordan did an excellent job of setting the ball for us and I think we were able to keep Eastern Wayne off balance."
The third set was never in doubt as C.B. Aycock opened up a 12-5 lead and never looked back.
Mercer led the Golden Falcons with seven kills and three blocks. Davis added eight kills and Jordan finished with 20 assists.
C.B. Aycock (8-6 overall, 5-4 ECC) will host South Johnston in a key conference matchup on Monday.
"We need to use this momentum and get ready for a big week next week," said Harris. "We have three league games and they are all at home and we need a couple wins."
Eastern Wayne (4-14, 2-8) plays host to Triton on Tuesday.
