Aycock's offense erupts in second half

Charles B. Aycock polished its offense a little bit Friday evening.

There's still plenty of tarnish to remove.

The Golden Falcons converted four of five second-half possessions into touchdowns and rolled to a 39-10, non-conference victory over Rosewood before a standing-room-only crowd at Branch Pope Field.

"I keep telling myself we've got five non-conference games to clean all of this up," said Aycock coach Randy Pinkowski. "We still have a long ways to go. We're running so many kids in and out, running so many formations that it's hard on the kids.

"It's a complicated scheme and it takes repetition. We'll get there."

Aycock's diversified scheme, which was bottled up for much of the first half, accumulated nearly 400 yards of total offense against a Rosewood defense that wore down during the final two quarters. The Golden Falcons' big offensive line controlled the trenches against the Eagles, who played seven two-way starters.

Marquis Bryant, Antonio Applewhite and Stevie Mitts broke loose for long touchdown runs in the third period. Applewhite and Bryant rushed for 65 and 59 yards, respectively.

Quarterback Tyler Farmer threw a 10-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown pass to A.J. Mundle in the fourth quarter. Farmer completed 8 of 15 passes for 147 yards, including five strikes to Craig Murdock (110 yards receiving).

The Golden Falcons owned a 386-163 edge in total offense.

"We could never get anything going up the middle, and most of the night they hemmed us up on the outside," said Rosewood head coach Robert Britt. "Other than the long drive we had in the second quarter, C.B. Aycock really did a good job defensively."

Rosewood (1-1 overall) came up empty on a 15-play drive that chewed up eight minutes on the clock before halftime. McGill completed one second-half pass -- a third-quarter, 70-yard TD pass to Jamie Wooten.

Wooten accounted for 98 yards of total offense.

A Golden Falcon miscue led to the game's initial score. Rosewood sophomore offensive lineman Jacob Guthrie recovered a fumble and set up Cody Harris' 30-yard field goal.

Murdock answered for Aycock. The senior all-everything player snatched a 55-yard touchdown pass from Farmer, and added a nine-yard scoring scamper after senior linebacker Shep Whitfield intercepted Eagles quarterback Taylor McGill.

"We gave up a lot of big plays," said Britt. "It's obvious we have to get in better condition because we've got a lot guys playing both ways. We're not good enough yet to make mistakes against a team like Aycock and be able to correct them."
