Chargers boot Patriots in OT

Battling gusting winds and chilly temperatures as much as it did its opponent, Wayne Country Day simply found a way to win.

Catherine Ford scored off an assist from Sarah Best in stoppage time during the second overtime period, and the Chargers survived for a 4-3 win over Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Friday afternoon.

"I'm just speechless," said Wayne Country Day head coach William Hogan. "The girls stayed in the game and kept their head in the game. The last play was just a lucky play between Sarah and Catherine. I can't ask for a better team."

Just eight minutes into the second half, Theresa Hall dribbled through the Wayne Country Day defense and beat Ford to give the Patriots a 3-2 lead.

Best tied the game at 3-3 in the 54th minute with a shot that got past Faith goalie Katie Brandt, and tucked into the bottom left corner.

"We talked about at the half that we wanted to possess the ball and take our time and control," said Hogan. "There was not a negative point in the game where our heads were down and we were disheartened."

Hall put the Patriots on the board in the ninth minute as her shot sailed over Ford's head and into the back of the net.

Stephanie Stallings collected a rebound off a corner kick and scored in the 30th minute to increase the lead to 2-0.

Best fed a pass into the 18-yard box that found Mack Thompson and Thompson hammered it home past Brandt in the 36th minute. A minute later, Thompson returned the favor to Best with a cross into the box that Best used to tie the game at 2-2.

Wayne Country Day finished with a 12-9 advantage in shots.

The Chargers (5-2-0) entertain Coastal Plains Independent foe Ridgecroft on Tuesday.
