ECC girls final set for Friday

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock picked the right time to play perhaps its best game of the season in a 47-39 upset over second-seeded South Johnston in the semifinals of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament on Wednesday night.

The third-seeded Golden Falcons (13-12 overall) face top-seeded Triton in Friday's finals at Southern Wayne. Tip-off is 6 p.m.

Imari Howell led Aycock with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Charlie Ipock and Courtnei Gilbert each had seven points.

"We shot the ball well," said Golden Falcons head coach Laura Romo. "I was looking for some of our kids to show a little confidence and step up and shoot, and they did. I've been waiting for Imari to step up and play like that so I was real proud of her."

Triton won both games with Aycock during regular-season play.

Illness hurts EW

DUDLEY -- Playing with a roster riddled by illness, Eastern Wayne could not keep up with Triton in the semifinals of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference girls' basketball tournament.

The top-seeded Hawks never trailed as they claimed a 53-34 victory and a berth in the championship game on Friday night against C.B. Aycock.

"We have to get healthy because we have one more chance to show what we can do in the state playoffs," said Warriors head coach Tyrone Wagner. "The girls are sad tonight, but we will regroup and go get after it on Monday."

Tia Jones paced the Warriors with seven points. Shontae Boseman added six points and grabbed nine boards.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association is expected to release the postseason pairings during the weekend.
