FOUR OAKS -- Southern Wayne escaped with a 62-59 win at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe South Johnston on Friday night.

Justin Artis paced the Saints with 21 points. Bernard Gross supplied 13 points and Rashadd Hill added eight points. John Joyner pulled down nine rebounds.

Dolton Bledsoe scored a game-high 29 points including five 3-pointer's for the Trojans.

Southern Wayne (14-8, 6-2 ECC) entertains Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

AG stomps ND

AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton cruised past Carolina 1-A Conference opponent North Duplin 69-42 on Friday night.

Devin Oliver and Alan Schilling each scored nine points for the Rebels. James Kornegay and Marcus Kornegay both supplied eight points.

Tevin Patterson led the Chargers with 24 points.

North Duplin (1-18, 1-7 CC) travels to Rosewood on Tuesday.

NL rallies past SW

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir rallied from a 19-point deficit and stunned Southern Wayne 65-60 on Thursday night.

Bernard Gross led the Saints with 17 points. Justin Artis contributed 16 points and Rashadd Hill had 12 points.

Southern Wayne entertains Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Girls' basketball

Delay game effective

PRINCETON -- The four corners worked with one exception.

Princeton employed a deliberate-style offense to negate Goldsboro's ability to run defensively, but couldn't just couldn't put the ball in the basket. The strategy frustrated the Cougars, who managed a season-low offensive output in their 31-12 victory on Friday evening.

Goldsboro (17-4 overall, 8-0 Carolina) can clinch a share of the regular-season championship Tuesday at Spring Creek.

"Goldsboro is so talented, so well-coached and so athletic and fast, we wanted to slow the game down to a crawl," said first-year Princeton head coach Marty Gurganus. "We felt like that was our greatest chance of being able to pull off an upset. We tried to go four-corners spread and get nothing but layups ... back-door cuts.

"Or, if we had a close jumper, that was fine."

The teams were tied at 2-2 after each converted its initial possession of the game. Goldsboro used an 8-0 run to take a 10-2 lead, but could never pull away and missed numerous shots within five feet of the basket. The Dawgs stayed within three possessions until the Cougars' Alexus Myles tallied eight of her game-high 14 points in the final period.

Four Goldsboro players scratched in the scoring column -- Zeara McDuffie (nine points), Akeyanna Whitlor (two) and Kasheika Wallace (six). Megan Gerrell and Nicole Melvin paced Princeton with four points apiece.

"Their game plan threw us off and worked," said Cougars coach Brandy Smith. "At the same time, though, we still have to be a step above what we did ... how we didn't execute on the opposite end defensively. We allowed what wasn't going our way offensively to dictate what we on defense.

"We stopped playing physical possessions on defense and not playing the passing lanes ... little things that we normally do. We didn't create other ways to score for us."

EW routs CBA

Eastern Wayne avenged an earlier loss to Charles B. Aycock with a 55-34 rout of the Golden Falcons on Friday night in New Hope.

Tiarra McIntyre led the Warriors with 23 points, including 15 in the first quarter. LaKeisha Stephens and Brittany Scurlock each had six points.

"We're just trying to use this as some momentum going into the conference tournament," said Eastern Wayne head coach Tyrone Wagner. "We often goes as Tiarra goes. If she plays well then we normally play well. A lot of girls feed off her energy."

Courtnei Gilbert finished with 10 points for Aycock. Kendra Speight provided nine points.

The Warriors (4-12, 3-5 ECC) travel to Southern Wayne on Tuesday while the Golden Falcons (10-11, 4-4) visit Triton.

Gators earn win

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek overcame a fast start by Rosewood and claimed a 42-32 win at "The Swamp" in Carolina 1-A Conference action on Friday night.

The victory moves the Gators into third place in the league standings and gives them the inside track to one of the conference's four playoff spots.

"I think this is as high in the girls standings as we have ever been," Gators head coach Amanda Ramfjord said. "We knew that we needed this game and our girls battled through some tired legs."

The Eagles raced out to an early 13-9 lead before the home team got it's offense in gear. Spring Creek erased the deficit and gained a 26-22 halftime lead.

The Gators never trailed in the second half.

Melanique DeVeaux led Spring Creek (7-11, 5-3) with 12 points. Jana Price added 10 markers in the win. Spring Creek will entertain Goldsboro on Tuesday night.

Rosewood (4-16, 2-6) was paced by Laura Vinson's nine point effort. Amanda Beckert contributed seven points. The Eagles will host North Duplin on Tuesday.

Rebels defeated

AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton defeated Carolina 1-A Conference foe North Duplin 32-20 on Friday evening.

Tearra Ammons led the Rebels with nine points. Jasmine Jones had four points.

North Duplin (1-18, 1-7) visits Rosewood on Tuesday.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Southern Wayne 51, South Johnston 28 -- Ronnell Outlaw finished with 12 points for the Saints (6-2) and Jamil Price added seven.

* Girls' basketball: Wayne Christian 26, Grace Christian 20 -- Kayle Wallace scored seven points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Katie Isenhower chipped in seven points with 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jessica Swets contributed added six points, five steals, three assists and three rebounds.

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 74, Princeton 22 -- Moses Ramsey led three Goldsboro players in double figures with 22 points. Octavis Alston and Damarian Henderson pumped in 21 and 17 points, respectively. The Cougars (19-0, 8-0 Carolina) travel to Spring Creek on Tuesday.
