Spring Creek saw a 13-point fourth-quarter lead disappear before surviving in overtime for a 62-57 win at Carolina 1-A Conference opponent Rosewood on Friday.

The Gators led 47-34 in the fourth quarter before the Eagles used a 17-5 run to pull within 52-51 on Logan Bill's 3-pointer. Bill scored a team-high 17 points.

Holly Heath made one of two free throws with 41 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 52-52.

Rosewood's Laura Vinson and Spring Creek's Melanquie DeVeaux each missed a pair of free throws in the closing seconds that could have given their respective teams the lead.

The Gators (4-8) scored six unanswered points to begin overtime and improved to 2-0 in conference play.

"Our goal is to finish first or second in the conference," said Spring Creek head coach Amanda Ramfjord. "We started that last week at Princeton and we wanted to carry that into tonight. We're ready for Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday night."

DeVeaux scored a game-high 24 points and fellow senior Norma Valentin added 18 points and 21 rebounds. The Gators entertain Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

"Melanquie did a great job and Norma did a good job on the boards," said Ramfjord. They're seniors and they know what it takes to win. They stepped up for us."

The Eagles (2-13, 0-2 CC) play host to Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Saints slip past Hawks

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne turned in its most complete quarter of the season in the fourth period on Friday and the Saints bested Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe North Lenoir 53-48.

Trailing 34-29 with eight minutes to play the Saints went to work behind some strong perimeter defense from Kanesha Jones who forced three early turnovers by the Hawks that were turned into six points on the other end.

Kayla Powell scored seven of her game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead Southern Wayne to it's first league win. Jones added 13 points and Danielle Carlton added 12 markers.

"This was a big win for this team because everyone contributed," Southern Wayne head coach Ricky Lofton said. "We are starting to come together like a family a little bit."

Jenna Rouse paced the Hawks with 11 points and Deshona Cox added 10 markers.

North Lenoir (10-7 overall, 0-3 ECC) will host South Johnston on Friday night.

Southern Wayne (2-9, 1-1) travels to South Johnston on Tuesday and will make the trip to Goldsboro on Wednesday.

GHS rolls

Goldsboro cruised past Carolina 1-A Conference opponent Princeton 55-22 on Friday night.

Zeara McDuffie led the Cougars with 18 points and 10 assists. Akeyanna Whitlor contributed 16 points and seven rebounds.

Goldsboro (9-4, 2-0 CC) visits Rosewood on Tuesday and Princeton (3-11, 0-2) travels to North Duplin.

Golden Falcons stumble

PIKEVILLE -- South Johnston defeated Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Charles B. Aycock 52-42 on Friday night.

Imari Howell supplied 16 points for the Golden Falcons and Courtney Sheeks added 10 points. Ivy Hartzell chipped in seven points.

Aycock (7-7, 1-1 ECC) plays host to Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Rebels downed

AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton got off to a hot start and held off a furious third quarter rally in a 60-41 victory over North Duplin on Friday night.

Kerennia Edmonds paced the Chargers with 20 points.

Tearra Ammons added a game-high 22 markers for North Duplin (0-12 overall). Angelica Favela tallied eight points in the defeat.

The Rebels will play host to Princeton on Tuesday.

Boys' basketball

Cougars rally

Goldsboro needed less than two minutes to erase a 10-point halftime deficit and held on for a 58-54 home win over Carolina 1-A Conference opponent Princeton on Friday night.

The Bulldogs led 31-18 in the second quarter and 31-21 at the half.

Devonte White and Rasean Brewington each scored 14 points for the Cougars. Demetrio Irby added eight points.

Princeton's T.J. Wilson led all scorers with 16 points and Andre Nixon provided 14 points and eight rebounds. David Gurganus chipped in 11 points and Matt Williamson had seven points.

Goldsboro (8-5, 2-0 CC) travels to Rosewood on Tuesday while Princeton (7-7, 1-1) visits North Duplin.

CBA victorious

PIKEVILLE -- Brandon Winford poured in 25 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and recorded two blocks in Charles B. Aycock's 60-43 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe South Johnston on Friday night.

Isaac Ryals added 13 points, five assists and three steals. Dontay Gills supplied six points and seven rebounds.

Dolton Bledsoe led the Trojans with seven points.

Aycock (13-1, 2-0 ECC) entertains Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Warriors fall short

ERWIN -- Lamar McDouglad hit a game-winning jump shot with five seconds remaining to lift Triton to a 41-39 over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Eastern Wayne on Friday night.

Will White scored 20 points for the Warriors and Dominique Sadler had eight points. David Gethers led the Hawks with 12 points.

Eastern Wayne (6-6, 1-1) travels to Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday.

North Duplin falls

AYDEN -- After battling through a back-and-forth first half North Duplin ran out offense in a 79-51 loss to Ayden-Grifton on Friday night.

Tevin Patterson led the Chargers with 18 points.

North Duplin was paced by James Kornegay's 23-point outing. Alan Schilling added 10 points in the loss and teammate Marcus Kornegay tallied eight markers.

The Rebels (0-12 overall) entertain Princeton on Tuesday.

Wrestling

Warriors go 0-4

Eastern Wayne's Austin Helm alternated between 130 and 135 pounds, and posted a 4-0 record during a four-team, dual wrestling meet Friday evening.

Helm collected two decisions, one fall and a forfeit for the Warriors.

Logan Wicks and James Barrett each finished 3-1. Corben Harris and Eric Lemmon ended up 2-2. Teammates Jasmine Doubt, Megan Lafave, Byron Washington and heavyweight Terrell Blake picked up one win apiece.

Eastern Wayne finished 0-4 as a team with losses against North Johnston, South Lenoir, East Carteret and Erwin Triton.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Southern Wayne 62, North Lenoir 35 -- Ronell Outlaw paced the Saints with 10 points. Jamell Price added nine points and Chris Artis delivered seven markers. Southern Wayne will travel to South Johnston on Tuesday.

* Boys' basketball: South Johnston 47, Aycock 41 -- A.J. Mundle scored 12 points for the Golden Falcons (5-6, 1-1 ECC) and Hunter Dentzer chipped in 10 points.

* Girls' basketball: C.B. Aycock 39, South Johnston 23 -- Sara Beth Marquis led the Golden Falcons with 15 points. Kayla Williams added nine points and Natana Martin tallied seven points. C.B. Aycock improved to 7-1 overall.
