Princeton defeats Hobbton

PRINCETON -- Princeton took a collective deep breath, gathered itself and regained its composure.

The Bulldogs rebounded from a shaky start, found their offensive rhythm and earned a 70-58 non-conference win over Hobbton on Wednesday night.

Princeton scored two points in the first five minutes of the ballgame and had eight first-quarter turnovers. The Wildcats built a 10-2 lead and led 14-10 heading into the second quarter.

The Bulldogs began to find their flow offensively while knocking down open shots. Princeton (2-2 overall) closed the half on a 16-6 run and led 31-26 at the break.

"I think tonight we came out too excited, and we were in too big a hurry and trying to force things too quickly," said Bulldogs head coach Jeff Davis. "I'm really trying to stress to them that we need to make five, six or seven passes and get a great shot. We kind of regressed in that tonight. We need to get loosened up and then try to force something."

Princeton got 28 points off its bench including 14 in the second half. Patrick Jacobs led the Bulldogs' reserves with 11 points. Starters David Gurganus and Andre Nixon contributed 14 and 11 points, respectively.

"I've never had any depth here," said Davis. "I think I've got 11 that can play. I've never had this kind of depth. I'm not used to getting all these guys minutes."

Princeton's lead grew to as much 68-49 in the second half and Hobbton never threatened again despite ending the game on a 9-2 run.

The Bulldogs travel to North Johnston on Friday.
