Goldsboro High, for the second time in a 24-hour span, got some late heroics and escaped with a victory.

Resean Brewington tallied the game-winning putback as time expired, and the Cougars beat Southern Nash 58-56 at Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Brewington capped a 15-point effort with the final basket. James Williams also added 15 points for Goldsboro. Michael Langston recorded nine points.

Coming off an overtime victory over Eastern Wayne on Tuesday night, the Cougars started red-hot from the field with 21 first-quarter points and were forced to hold on as the Firebirds rallied late.

"We really got off to a great start on the offensive end," said first-year Goldsboro head coach Patrick Reynell. "As the game wore on, I think we lost our legs a little bit. We are still playing with just eight players."

The Cougars (3-1 overall) entertain Charles B. Aycock on Friday.

Gators stop Patriots

KINSTON -- Spring Creek overcame a slow start and rallied for a 43-30, non-conference victory over Arendell-Parrott Academy on Wednesday night.

The Patriots led 17-10 at the half, but could not withstand a late Gator rally.

Melvin DeVeaux paced Spring Creek with 11 points and six rebounds. John Midgette added four points and five assists.

Spring Creek (4-2 overall) travels to Farmville Central on Dec. 16.

Saints win

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne committed just seven turnovers all night and earned a 56-30 win over Northside on Tuesday night.

Bernard Gross finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Khari Faison added eight points and Davonte Artis pulled down eight rebounds.

Eagles grounded

North Johnston played solid defense throughout in its 51-38 victory over Rosewood on Wednesday night.

Jacquez Raynor paced the Eagles with 10 points. Antonio Henriquez added seven markers.

Rosewood (1-5 overall) will travel to Midway on Friday night.

Girls' basketball

Hobbton cages Dogs

PRINCETON -- Neisha Lewis scored a game-high 20 points to lead Hobbton past Princeton 52-36 on Wednesday night.

Amarose Schoomaker added 18 points for the Wildcats.

Tylan George led the Bulldogs with nine points.

Cougars prevail

Akeyanna Whitlor tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds as Goldsboro defeated Southern Nash 66-51 on Wednesday night.

Zearra McDuffie added 16 points and a career-high 12 assists in the win. Alexus Myles rounded out the Cougars in double figures with 12 points.

Goldsboro (4-0 overall) will play host to C.B. Aycock on Friday night.

Gators defeated

KINSTON -- Melanique DeVeaux finished just three assists shy of a triple-double, but it was not enough to lift Spring Creek past Arendell Parrott Academy on Wednesday night.

The Patriots claimed a 50-42 victory.

Spring Creek's Amy Parker led all scorers with 18 points. DeVeaux added 12 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in the defeat.

The Gators (1-4 overall) will travel to Farmville Central on Dec. 16.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Southern Wayne 51, Northside 42 -- Stephen Darden scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Saints. Jamil Price contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 58, Southern Nash 44 -- Damarion Henderson paced the Cougars with 19 points. Goldsboro will host C.B. Aycock on Friday.

* Boys' basketball: Rosewood 48, North Johnston 34 -- Zach Thornton pumped in 21 points to pace th Eagles. Shane Whitley added 14 markers. Rosewood (4-2 overall) will travel to Midway on Friday.

* Girls' basketball: Eastern Wayne 63, Goldsboro 32 -- Jasmine Benjamin led the Warriors with 20 points, five steals and rebounds. Tasia Marsh contributed eight points and six rebounds. Sequia Hall tallied seven points and five assists.

* Girls' basketball: St. Mary's 22, Wayne Country Day 2 -- Mollie McDonald scored the lone points for the Chargers. McKenna Dove led St. Mary's offense with eight points. Meagan Reimer chipped in four points. Madison Wildman, Tricia Malcolm, Christina Musses, Christine Conger and Austin Jeffreys added two points apiece. WCDS fell to 0-3 overall and travels to Flora MacDonald on Friday.
