HARRELLS -- Spring Creek hung on for a 61-57, non-conference victory over Harrells Christian Academy on Tuesday night.

The Gators sank eight free throws in the final minute to preserve the win.

Melvin DeVeaux led the way for the Gators with 21 points, six rebounds and six steals. Adam Haggerty supplied a career-high 20 points to go with eight rebounds and seven blocks.

"I was very proud of our effort in the second half," said Spring Creek head coach Taylor Jones. "More than the effort, our defense, poise and toughness won this hard-fought contest."

The Gators visit Parrott Academy tonight.

WCS survives

RALEIGH -- Wayne Christian held off a late rally and survived Grace Christian for a 70-63 victory in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

Tyler Mooring finished with 14 points and four rebounds for the Eagles. Taurell Singletary chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and four steals. Taylor Johnson and Luke Howell tallied 11 points apiece.

Wayne Christian (2-4 overall) returns to action Friday in the two-day Wilson Christian Invitational.

Hobbs leads Chargers

Tim Hobbs finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Hil Tanner had 16 points to lead Wayne Country Day past Waccamaw 73-38 on Tuesday night.

Reco McCarter contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.

Wayne Country Day (5-3 overall) visits Flora McDonald on Friday.

Dogs triumph

PRINCETON -- Princeton placed four scorers in double figures and cruised past Midway, 76-49, for its first win of the season on Tuesday night.

Wes Wood contributed 12 points for the Bulldogs. Benton Myers provided 11 points and eight rebounds. Austin Jacobs supplied 11 points. Andre Nixon chipped in 10 points.

Kyle Knowles led the Raiders with 17 points.

Princeton (1-2 overall) entertains Hobbton tonight.

Rebels shut down

CLINTON -- Greg Carroll scored a game-high 23 points and led Union to a 59-34 win over North Duplin on Tuesday night.

Devin Oliver led the Rebels with 14 points. James Kornegay and Marcus Kornegay pitched in seven points apiece.

North Duplin (0-4 overall) travels to Hobbton on Friday.

Girls' basketball

Hunt downs CBA

PIKEVILLE -- Wilson Hunt forced 20 first half turnovers and cruised to a 73-41, non-conference win at Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday night.

The Warriors built a 38-13 halftime lead as the Golden Falcons never threatened in the second half.

Vicky White led Hunt with 16 points.

Courtney Sheeks had 12 for Aycock, while teammate Courtnei Gilbert added 11.

The Golden Falcons (1-4 overall) travel to Goldsboro on Friday.

Goldsboro wins

Goldsboro controlled the front court and claimed a 60-56, non-conference victory over county rival Eastern Wayne on Tuesday evening.

The Cougars overcame an early deficit on the strength of Akeyanna Whitlor and Zearra McDuffie. The tallest player on the floor, Whitlor tallied 23 points and 13 boards, while McDuffie scored 16 points and tallied four rebounds.

McDuffie hit four crucial free throws in the final minute to preserve the win.

Eastern Wayne (0-5 overall) was paced by Tia Jones' 16-point outing. Tiarra McIntyre added 14 markers in the loss. The Warriors will battle Wilson Hunt on Friday night.

Goldsboro (3-0) entertains Southern Nash tonight.

SC victorious

HARRELLS -- Spring Creek pulled out a 48-44, non-conference win at Harrells Christian Academy on Tuesday night.

Melanique DeVeaux scored a game-high 18 points for the Gators to go with seven rebounds, three steals and an assist. Norma Valentin tallied 13 points and eight rebounds. Janna Price had five points, while Kaitlyn Casey added seven assists and two steals.

Spring Creek (1-3 overall) visits Parrott Academy tonight.

WCDS prevails

Defending state champion Wayne Country Day picked up its first win of the season by knocking off Waccamaw 58-17 on Tuesday evening.

Kim Martell paced the Chargers with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Catherine Ford contributed 16 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Sarah Best added 11 points and 10 assists.

Wayne Country Day (1-3 overall) is the guest of Flora McDonald on Friday.

Eagles win

HENDERSON -- Wayne Christian turned back Crossroads Christian 57-40 on the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference scene Tuesday evening.

Hanna Kaler supplied 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Eagles. Kaitlyn Kosuda finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and an assist. Kayla Kennedy added 10 points, eight rebounds, three steals and an assist. Jennifer Price had 13 rebounds, six steals, five assists and three points.

Wayne Christian (4-2 overall 3-1 CCC) returns to action Friday in the Wilson Christian Invitational.

Swimming

Chargers compete

Wayne Country Day's Thomas Elmore recorded a pair of top-three finishes during a six-team meet contested Tuesday evening at Darden Natatorium inside the Goldsboro Family Y.

Elmore touched the wall second in 1 minute, 1.77 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and claimed third overall (26.9 seconds) in the 50 free. He also swam the anchor leg on the Chargers' 200 free relay, which placed fourth in 2:05.93.

Ravi Chittila ended up seventh in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free. Adam Cohn took seventh in the 100 free and 10th in the 50 free. Each competed on the 200 free relay along with Walker Malphass.

On the girls' side, Ana Zbarcea placed seventh in the 50 free and fifth in the 100 breaststroke. Teammates Charlotte Yarboro and Elizabeth Schappell ended up 20th and 21st, respectively, in the 50 free.

WCDS swam against Arendell-Parrott, The Epiphany School, Trinity-Raleigh, Rocky Mount Academy, Faith Christian-Rocky Mount and Oakwood Academy.

Wrestling

Gators escape

BEULAVILLE -- Once the final contested match had been decided and all forfeits were recorded in the score book, Spring Creek and East Duplin finished in a 42-42 deadlock.

But the Gators received the tie-breaking point -- and victory -- based on Level II criteria, which is six-point wins, according to the National Federation of High Schools rule book. Spring Creek logged four pins in six individual contested bouts.

Daniel Richter (125 pounds), David Smith (135), Jerome Butts (140) and 215-pounder Kevin Lipscomb each pinned their respective opponent. Teammates Thomas Edwards (103), Raheem Fuller (112) and Ian Ladd (119) each drew a forfeit.

Spring Creek (2-4 overall) travels to Ayden-Grifton today.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: C.B. Aycock 30, Wilson Hunt 29 -- Tony Gardner sank one out of two free throws with less than a second to play to give the Golden Falcons the win. Gardner led Aycock with 12 points and Hunter Dentzer had six. Jalen Williams pulled down 13 rebounds. The Golden Falcons (3-2 overall) visit Goldsboro on Friday.

* Girls' basketball: C.B. Aycock 33, Wilson Hunt 12 -- Kayla Newsome finished with nine points for the Golden Falcons and Sarah Beth Marquis added seven points. The Golden Falcons (3-0 overall) visit Goldsboro on Friday.

* Girls' basketball: Eastern Wayne 63, Goldsboro 32 -- Jasmine Benjamin led the Warriors with 20 points, five steals and four rebounds. Tasia Marsh contributed eight points and six rebounds. Sequia Hall pumped in seven points and dished out five assists.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Greenwood 38, Eastern Wayne 35 -- Greenwood's Rasheed Malette led all scorers with 18 points and seven steals. Shahim Muhammad had 11 points. Malik Richard finished with 13 points for the Warriors. Greenwood improved to 3-1 overall.
