State-ranked Word of God used a 10-0 run that spanned nearly a quarter to break open a tight ballgame and cruise to a 73-39, non-conference win at Wayne Country Day on Wednesday night.
C.J. Leslie scored a game-high 19 points for the Holy Rams.
Reco McCarter paced the Chargers with 11 points.
"We knew they have a very good team," said Wayne Country Day head coach Terry Jones. "We actually looked forward to the opportunity to see where we are as it relates to the top teams in the state. Word of God went to a zone and we've had a lot of trouble against that all year."
Wayne Country Day (3-3 overall) faces Jamestown Ragsdale in the opening round of the Forsyth Country Day Invitational on Friday.
Rebels fall in opener
SALEMBURG -- North Duplin came up just short in a 59-58, season-opening loss at Lakewood on Tuesday night.
Devin Oliver led the Rebels with 18 points, while Marcus Kornegay added 17. James Kornegay scored 12 points.
North Duplin entertains Hobbton tonight.

* Boy's basketball: C.B. Aycock 36, Rosewood 26 -- Marques White paced the Golden Falcons with 15 points and seven rebounds. Greg Williams provided seven points.
* Girls' basketball: C.B. Aycock 47, Rosewood 15 -- Natana Martin led a balanced Golden Falcons scoring attack with 10 points. Kayla Williams added nine points, followed by Sara Marquis with eight. Niki Fitzmorris and Lizzie Fortner contributed six points apiece.
