CB Aycock takes down Greene Central

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock kept plugging away.
The Golden Falcons overcame a poor shooting performance in the first quarter and made plays late in a 66-58, season-opening win over Greene Central on Monday night.
Aycock struggled to knock down shots early and the Rams capitalized by building a 9-5 lead after one quarter.
The Golden Falcons chipped away at the deficit and tied the game at 19-19. Isaac Ryals buried a 3-pointer, while teammates Antwone Williams and Artemus Taylor provided layups during the run.
Brandon Winford added seven second-quarter points and Terrance Drakeford's layup gave Aycock a 28-26 lead at halftime.
"The important part was in the first quarter," said Aycock head coach David West. "We weren't doing that bad, it's just that shots weren't dropping. We just had to keep plugging away. Things aren't dropping, but you know you're doing the right things and you just have to keep doing the right things and trusting each other.
"That's what they did and eventually it turned around."
Will Bynum's 3-pointer briefly gave Greene Central a 29-28 lead to start the second half. Ryals scored eight of his game-high 21 points during the third quarter and Aycock opened up a 45-39 lead with one quarter to play.
"Isaac's going to penetrate, he's going to put the ball down and go," said West. "He just needs to work on what he's doing after he draws the defense. When he does penetrate there's three, four and five guys in there putting their hands in there and it's making it real tough on him.
"As time goes on I think you'll see an even better performance from Isaac."
Greene Central quickly sliced the deficit to 45-43 and managed to tie the game twice in the final quarter. However, the Rams were just 8 of 16 from the free throw line over the final eight minutes and shot 12 for 26 from the line for the game. Greene Central twice wasted opportunities to take the lead from the free throw line.
"That kills you," said Rams head coach Erik Lynch. "You can't win shooting like that. I think we played the style we wanted to play. I just wish some shots went down."
Winford turned in a double-double for the Golden Falcons with 13 points and 24 rebounds.
"I was very impressed with Winford," said West. "That's an awesome night. That's a kid that will give you a double-double every night."
Bynum paced Greene Central (0-1) with 17 points. Bobby Waters added 16 and Desmond Sheppard provided 14.
Aycock travels to Wilson Hunt tonight.
