Triton girls, S. Johnston boys prevail in meet

Triton pulled off a rare cross country feat on Tuesday afternoon on its way to dominating the girls' portion of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference kickoff meet at Waynesborough Park.

The Hawks placed four runners among the top five and six in the top 10 to compile a perfect score of 15.

Eastern Wayne finished second with 47 points, followed by Southern Wayne with 49. Charles B. Aycock, Southern Johnston and North Lenoir did not have enough runners to earn team scores.

Triton's Laura Godwin finished first with a time of 23 minutes, 25 seconds -- nearly a half minute ahead of teammate Dava Johnston (23:50). The Hawks' Adriana Rosado was third overall in 25:21.

Aycock's Khendra Speight came home fourth in 25:36. Triton's Lauren Mozingo (25:37) and Sunni Queipo (25:48) were fifth and sixth, respectively.

Eastern Wayne's Heather Black finished seventh with a time of 25:49 ahead of the Golden Falcons' Jessica Kyer (26:28). Triton's Britny Lucas (27:43) was ninth and Eastern Wayne's Madeline Edwards (27:57) rounded out the top 10.

"We have a real young team and most of them have three or four years to get better," said Warriors head coach Sidney Myers. "This was a great start for us. This helps tremendously."

South Johnston claimed three of the top five spots in the boys' race on its way to 30-point outing. Eastern Wayne captured second with 69 points, followed by Triton (70), Southern Wayne (88), Aycock (113) and North Lenoir (139).

South Johnston's Cirilo Perez was the first male finisher with a time of 17:52, followed by teammate Pat Worthington (18:18).

Eastern Wayne's Russell Turner was third in 18:45. Triton's Nathan Turner was fourth in 19:10. North Lenoir's Zack Baird (19:21) and Eastern Wayne's Caleb Cooper (19:22) crossed the line sixth and seventh, respectively.

The Saints' Cole Byrd (20:20) and Trevor Morgan took eighth and 10th, respectively.

In his team's third meet of the season, but first against fellow ECC schools, Myers was pleased with the progress he saw from his squad.

"This was the first time we've run with our new conference and there are some unknowns," said Myers. "The guys had no idea who they had to run against in terms of competition. I told them to go out there and run against themselves, and we would figure out the competition and they did that.

"I was proud of them."

The Warriors visit Wilson Hunt on Thursday. The meet begins at 5 p.m.
