Edenton takes series lead against Wayne County

MOUNT OLIVE -- Edenton Post 40 brought plenty of offense to the Scarborough Field diamond in their Area-I East playoff game against Wayne County on Thursday night.

Post 40's pitching wasn't bad either.

Andrew Womble tossed a complete game as Edenton pummeled Wayne County 15-5 in a seven inning game that was shortened by the mercy rule. Post 40 leads the best-of-five series 2-1.

Game four is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at Hicks Field in Edenton.

"We are falling behind way too many batters," Wayne County head coach Brad Reaves said. "We aren't going to strike a lot of guys out, so we need to get ground balls and work ahead in the count. Tonight we did not do that."

Wayne County seized a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Colton Fulghum delivered a sacrifice fly that plated Robert Faucette. Unfortunately for the home fans, the rally ended abruptly as Post 11 left the bases loaded.

Edenton took advantage in the top of the third.

Robert Jacot led off with a single and was followed by Nikolai Simonsen's base hit. Tyler Barrington belted a sacrifice fly and was followed by back-to-back base hits from J.J. Allen and Daniel Oliver. After John Hunter drew a walk, Edenton broke the game open with four consecutive base hits.

The seven-run outburst featured seven hits and took the wind out the Wayne County sails.

"Post 40 hit a lot of balls hard tonight," said Reaves. "And the balls that they didn't hit hard all found holes."

Edenton put the game away in the top of the fourth.

Barrington drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on Allen's base hit. Oliver delivered a sacrifice fly and Hunter followed with a single. Cameron Peed plated Allen by bouncing into a fielder's choice. Chad Whitehead's double capped the scoring.

Trailing 11-2, Reaves found innings for a variety of pitchers. Four hurlers split the seven inning affair.

"One thing we have is a number of guys that can throw," Reaves said. "We have Taylor Allen, John Wooten, Tyler Edwards, and Cody Richards who can all go tonight if we need them."

Trailing 15-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Wayne County tried to extend the game. Cambric Moye blasted a solo home run to lead off the inning and was followed by a double off the bat of Faucette.

Womble settled down and quelled the rally thanks to a pair of strong defensive plays from Oliver at first base.

"You have to give (Edenton) credit, they played a great game," said Reaves. "We have to come out tonight and play our best if we want to play game five."

If the series comes back to Mount Olive, game five is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday night.
