Post 11 dominates

MOUNT OLIVE -- One step at a time.

Wayne County Post 11 exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning and rode the left arm of Eric DuBose to a 14-1 win in 6 1/2 innings over Edenton Post 40 on Tuesday night at Scarborough Field.

Post 11 claimed a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five, quarterfinal-round Area I East Division series.

John Wooten scored on an error in the bottom of the first to give Wayne County a 1-0 lead. Scott Holloman's RBI single extended the advantage to 2-0.

Jesse DeSanto's RBI single to right field pulled Edenton to within 2-1 in the top of the second inning.

Holloman's RBI single pushed the margin to 3-1 in the bottom of the second. Cambric Moye scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 4-1.

Post 11 erupted for eight runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth. Holloman, Cody Richards, Colton Fulghum and Tyler Edwards each provided RBI singles. Wooten furthered the damage with a towering grand-slam to left field to bury Edenton in a 12-1 hole.

Holloman finished 4-for-4 with three RBI and also reached on a walk. Fulghum added two hits and two RBI.

"I really felt like if we could just get John back up there I knew we could break their backs," said Wayne County head coach Brad Reaves. "They had to pitch to him then."

Wayne County (10-6 overall) tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth on an Edenton error and Fulghum's sacrifice fly. Edenton finished the ballgame with five errors that led to three unearned runs.

"The thing we did tonight that we hadn't been doing was we took advantage of their mistakes," said Reaves. "We hadn't been doing that early. Tonight we took advantage of just about every mistake they made. If we can do that we can win."

DuBose pitched a complete game allowing one earned run on 11 hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

"The kids like to play for Eric because he keeps them in ballgames," said Reaves. "He's got such good composure up there and he just pitches. They like to play behind him. Eric is going to pound the strike zone and he makes pitches when he needs to make pitches."

The teams play again today at Edenton.

"I just told the boys if we can go have a good night (Wednesday) night we can really take the wind out of their sails," said Reaves. "I felt like we went a long way toward doing that tonight, but we just can't get complacent."
