RALEIGH -- Taylor Gray and Woody Sasser emerged the top singles performers in their respective flights and Wayne Christian claimed the 2009 Carolina Christian 1-A Conference boy's tennis tournament title on the Lions Park courts Tuesday.

Gray bested the competition at the No. 1 slot, while Sasser triumphed at No. 4. Teammates Christopher Easom and Daniel Glover finished second at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Jason Lin ended up second at No. 6 singles.

Gray-Easom took the No. 1 doubles championship and improved to 11-0 this season. Glover-Sasser seized the No. 2 doubles crown and remained unbeaten in nine outings.

The Eagles return to action Friday in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association championships at Barton College.

Warriors advance

JACKSONVILLE -- Eastern Wayne advanced to the eastern semifinals of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs with an 8-1 win over Jacksonville on Tuesday.

Russell Turner, Aaron Dunmire, Eric Barnes, Mike Barnette, Joe DiCesare and Will Kastner each picked up a singles point. Turner-Barnes and DiCesare-Kastner also triumphed in doubles.

The Warriors (13-3 overall) travel to state-ranked Charles B. Aycock next Tuesday. First serve is 4 p.m. in Pikeville.

CBA escapes

GREENVILLE -- C.B. Aycock won third-set tiebreakers in three of six singles matches and upended No. 10-ranked D.H. Conley 5-2 in the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs.

The No. 5-ranked Golden Falcons received third-set wins from Addison Westbrook, Dylan Quinn and Rawad Alawar. Quinn and Alawar won their respective opening sets, while Westbrook rallied from a one-set deficit.

Top-seeded Blake Vail claimed a straight-set victory.

Westbrook-Ben Nichols secured Aycock's win with a 10-7 decision at No. 2 doubles. The Nos. 1 and 3 doubles were tied at 8-8 when Westbrook-Nichols wrapped up match point.

The Golden Falcons (14-1 overall) entertain archrival Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Baseball

Eagles ousted

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Christian fell 6-3 to Faith Christian of Rocky Mount in the quarterfinals of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs on Tuesday.

The Eagles gave up five first-inning and couldn't recover.

Kyle Harrell and Dom Arthur (home run) each had a hit for Wayne Christian. Luke Howell took the pitching loss.

WCDS falls

WHITEVILLE -- Wayne Country Day had its season come to a close with a 9-2 loss at Waccamaw during quarterfinal-round play of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs on Tuesday.

Hil Tanner led the Chargers with two hits. Cody Neal, Cameron Ford and Stoan Stewart each added hits.

Wayne Country Day was plagued by four errors in the first three innings. Ford took the loss on the mound.

Softball

Saints drop Warriors

DUDLEY -- Lauren Darden pitched a complete game and Southern Wayne rode a five-run first inning to a 7-2 win over visiting Eastern Wayne in the first round of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament on Tuesday.

The Saints pushed across five runs on four hits in the first inning and scored runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.

Jordan Coor, Madison Davis, and Darden (RBI) each collected two hits for Southern Wayne. Brittany Pate (two RBI) and Tara Hirsch each added hits.

Darden struck out 12 and allowed just one hit in the complete game effort.

Carissa Turner recorded the Warriors lone hit. Lani Fricks took the loss on the mound for Eastern Wayne (9-14 overall) allowing seven runs (three earned) on seven hits.

Southern Wayne (11-12) visits Charles B. Aycock at 7 p.m. tonight in the second round of the ECC tournament.

Hawks reach finals

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir advanced to the finals of the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference tournament with a 2-1 victory over Greene Central on Tuesday.

Aaryn Deal earned the win on the mound for the Hawks, allowing four hits with three walks while striking out seven.

Kristen Davenport led North Lenoir with two hits and Mindi Stallings and Courtney Hill both added a hit.

Megan Lovett collected a hit and an RBI for the Rams. Liz Webb took the loss on the mound.

The Hawks (17-6 overall) visit Farmville Central tonight in the EPC tournament championship game.

Bulldogs tag Gators

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Princeton pounded out 12 hits in just five innings and earned a 13-0, mercy-rule shortened win at Spring Creek on Tuesday.

Ashley Braswell provided three hits for the Bulldogs, including a home run to go with four RBI. Hannah Wood added three hits and three RBI. Megan Gerrell and Brittany Baker (three RBI) each added two hits. Amber Wood and Hannah Woodard both tacked on a hit.

Traci Bridgers, Amber Wood and Maegan Myers combined to record the shutout on the mound for Princeton.

Janna Price contributed two hits for the Gators and Katelyn Casey added a hit. Elizabeth Edwards suffered the loss on the mound.

The Bulldogs (11-6 overall, 7-2 CC) conclude regular-season play Thursday at Rosewood.

Panthers maul Rebels

KENLY -- Defending Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season champion North Johnston roughed up North Duplin 17-0 in 4 1/2 innings on Tuesday evening.

Tearra Ammons and Ashley Cartwright collected hits for the Rebels.

Ansley Hill took the loss on the mound in North Duplin's season finale.

WCS defeated

HENDERSON -- Wayne Christian lost 5-3 at Kerr-Vance in the first round of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs on Tuesday.

Sarah McCollum led the Eagles (6-7) overall with two hits. Carly Hightower, Reagan Hinton and Kayla Kennedy each contributed hits.

Trailing 5-3 in the seventh inning Wayne Christian had the tying run at the plate, but couldn't capitalize.

Eagles lasso Chargers

Haile Meadows tossed a complete-game shutout and Rosewood turned back visiting Ayden-Grifton 3-0 on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene Tuesday.

Caitlin Armer and Kayla Ormond each had two hits for the Eagles. Meadows struck out nine and walked two.

Rosewood entertains Princeton at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
