PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock continued its hot start on the softball diamond with a 5-1, non-conference victory over Greene Central on Wednesday night.

Cynthia Burroughs led the Golden Falcons at the plate with a double and an RBI. Autumn Pittman finished with two RBI. Anna Sullivan and Cara Frederick each recorded a double.

Pittman claimed the pitching win.

Jessica Moore powered the Rams' effort with two hits and a stolen base. Shanna Parker added a two-run double.

Charles B. Aycock (5-1 overall) launches defense of its co-Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season championship at home today against Wilson Beddingfield. First pitch is 7 p.m.

Greene Central (0-4) is the guest of Ayden-Grifton today.

Hawks cruise

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir showed off its power in a 15-0, non-conference win over county rival Kinston on Wednesday.

Kendal Letchworth finished with two hits that included a triple, a home run and four RBI. Kristen Davenport added a pair of doubles for the Hawks.

Erin Deal emerged the winning pitcher.

North Lenoir (3-2 overall) entertains Spring Creek today.

Eagles downed

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Rosewood never got its offense on track in a 2-0 loss to Midway on Wednesday afternoon.

Jennifer Hall, Kayla Ormond and Christina Bruton each recorded one hit for the Eagles.

Haile Meadows suffered the defeat in the pitcher's circle. The senior right-hander allowed five hits and struck out five.

Rosewood (3-1 overall) gets a rematch against Midway at home on Friday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

Rebels ousted

NEWTON GROVE -- Hobbton earned a 9-3 decision over visiting North Duplin on Wednesday afternoon.

The Rebels were led by Ashley Cartwright's 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Angelica Favela and Tearra Ammons each finished with one hit and one RBI apiece for North Duplin.

The teams meet again today in Calypso.

Golf

Hunt wins at home

WILSON -- Defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference champion Wilson Hunt increased its lead to a whopping 39 strokes after placing first among six teams Tuesday at Happy Valley Country Club.

The host Warriors carded a four-player total of 333.

Eastern Wayne fired a team score of 359, which was good enough for third place. The Warriors were paced by Ryan Lake's round of 88. Carson Daly and Caleb Jones each shot 89.

Southern Wayne (371) came home in fifth place as a team. Robert Herring and Will Bunch each finish with rounds of 90 to lead the Saints.

Charles B. Aycock carded a team total of 398. C.P. Cranford led the Golden Falcons with a 78. Chase Parnell added a 96.

The teams return to action Monday at Wedgewood GC in Wilson.

Baseball

Hawks soar

KINSTON -- North Lenoir found its offense early and often en route to a 12-1 win over archrival Kinston on Wednesday night.

Mike Wetherington tossed six innings and struck out seven on the mound.

Tyler Potter paced the Hawks at the plate with three hits and five RBI. Potter also delivered the knockout blow with a grand slam that capped the scoring.

Wes Brantley and Wil Sutton added two hits apiece for the Hawks.

North Lenoir (4-2 overall) visits Rosewood on Monday.

Golden Falcons prevail

SNOW HILL -- Connor Narron belted a triple and a home run as Charles B. Aycock topped Greene Central 5-2 on Wednesday.

Will Edgerton helped the Golden Falcons' cause with three hits and one RBI.

Jordan Quinn emerged the winning pitcher for the Golden Falcons. Quinn lasted five innings and struck out six batters.

Greene Central was paced by Justin Everette's 2-for-3 outing. David Stallings finished with one hit and one RBI.

The Golden Falcons (5-1 overall) entertain Beddingfield today, while the Rams (3-2) play host to Spring Creek.

Chargers halted

WHITEVILLE -- Wayne Country Day saw its comeback attempt fall short in a 14-10 loss at Waccamaw Academy on Wednesday.

The Chargers fell behind 11-0 after three innings and desperately tried to battle back.

Cameron Ford led the Chargers' offense with a three-run home run and four RBI. Cole Davis and Jack Scott each tallied three hits in the loss. Hil Tanner reached base twice and notched two RBI.

"We got behind early and we could have folded and gone home," said Wayne Country Day head coach Michael Taylor. "But these boys battled back and made it a good game."

The Chargers (0-1 overall) entertain Rocky Mount Prep today.

Rebels downed

NEWTON GROVE -- Hobbton took advantage of some sloppy play by North Duplin en route to a 15-8 victory on Wednesday.

The Rebels committed five errors in the loss.

James Kornegay led North Duplin offensively with three hits and one run scored. Marcus Kornegay added two hits and stole two bases.

The Rebels (1-3 overall) welcome Hobbton today.

Soccer

EW gets 0-0 tie

Eastern Wayne and North Lenoir settled for a scoreless draw on the Little Big Horn pitch Wednesday evening.

The Warriors outshot the Hawks 8-6, but could not find the mark.

Deborah Doran made four saves to earn the shutout in goal for Eastern Wayne. Jenna Rouse stopped five shots for North Lenoir.

Eastern Wayne (1-1-2 overall) travels to Wilson Hunt on Friday.

Cougars edged

The Charles B. Aycock junior varsity squad bested Goldsboro 5-2 on the pitch on Wednesday afternoon.

Holly Pittard and Elizabeth Bailey each scored one goal for the Cougars.

Goldsboro (0-2 overall) faces C.B. Aycock on April 8.

Tennis

Saints survive

KINSTON -- Southern Wayne scratched out a 5-4 win over North Lenoir in Kinston on Wednesday.

Chris King, Kobi Hood and Brandon Outlaw each earned a singles point for the Saints.

The tandems of King-Outlaw and Hugo Ayala-Hood locked up the match with a pair of critical points in doubles play.

Southern Wayne (5-2 overall) is the guest of Wilson Hunt today.

JV sports

* Baseball: Eastern Wayne 4, Southern Wayne 1 -- Zack Mozingo struck out eight batters as Eastern Wayne bested Southern Wayne in Dudley. Mozingo also powered the Warriors at the plate with one hit and two RBI. Tyler Gainey and Jeremy Taylor each recorded one hit for the Saints respectively.

* Girls' soccer: Eastern Wayne 1, North Lenoir 0 -- Emily Kaspar tallied the Warriors' lone goal in the 63rd minute.

Middle schools

* Softball: Grantham 15, Brogden 0 -- Taylor Parker struck out seven of the nine batters she faced as Grantham bested Brogden 15-0 in three innings. Taylor Davis and Hope Rose each finished with three hits respectively in the win. Grantham (2-1 overall, 2-0 WCMSAC Division II) entertains Greenwood today.

* Soccer: Norwayne 10, Greenwood 0 -- Cheyanne Warrick scored four goals as Norwayne cruised past Greenwood. Tara Simmons and Madison Mercer each added two markers apiece in the win. Taylor Rhue and Emily Borel also scored for the Cobras. Norwayne (2-0 overall) welcomes Elm City on Tuesday.
