CBA downs Rosewood soccer

PIKEVILLE -- Possession.

It isn't always about how much you have but rather what you make of it.

Charles B. Aycock capitalized on its possession while playing "bend-but-don't-break" defense in a 2-0, non-conference victory over county rival Rosewood on Wednesday afternoon.

Taylor DeMartini got the Golden Falcons on the board early in the first half on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. DeMartini's blast clanged off the post and past Eagles' keeper Taylor Johnson.

"Taylor put in the perfect place," said Aycock head coach Tom Zietlow. "I haven't seen anyone that can stop that when she hits the post right at the bottom. No one is going to stop that one."

Rosewood struggled to turn possession into scoring opportunities in the first half. The Eagles trailed just 1-0 at the break despite not registering a shot on goal in the first 40 minutes and earning only one corner kick.

"Aycock is the first quality opponent we've played," said Rosewood head coach Eddie Maldonado. "We had a good practice (Tuesday) but I knew it was going to be a challenge."

Jessica Price was in the right place at the right time midway through the second half to collect a loose ball in the 18-yard box. Johnson had charged out of the goal to scoop up the ball, but Price slipped it in the back of the net before the Eagles keeper could put an end to the scoring threat.

"Jessica was in the right place and she was just able to put in the back off the net," said Zietlow. "We were able to just finish off the game from there."

Rosewood (2-1-0 overall) tallied three shots on goal in the second half, but never threatened the Aycock defense. Crossing passes appeared to be a moment late and penetrating past the Golden Falcons defenders proved to be difficult.

"We got the possession, but it seemed like the couple of times we did get it on their end we couldn't make those last couple of passes to pressure their goal keeper," said Maldonado. "We'll just keep working and hopefully we'll get better."

Weather permitting, Aycock (2-1-1) entertains Princeton at 7 p.m. on Friday. Rosewood travels to North Lenoir on Monday.
