Wayne Country Day set to host Charger Classic

The inaugural Wayne Country Day Charger Christmas Classic is scheduled to begin this afternoon and continue through Saturday evening.

The field features a handful of boys and girls teams ranked in the state. Play gets under way at 3 p.m. today with girls action as Cape Fear Christian faces Village Christian.

Wayne Country Day's girls square-off with Fayetteville Christian at 4:30.

On the boys' side, Carolina Prep and Mt. Zion will take the court at 6 p.m. this evening, followed by Wayne Country Day and Jireh Prep.

Wayne Country Day's boys (10-5) return to action following a 10-day layoff for exams and Christmas.

"Conditioning will certainly become a factor as all three visiting boys teams look to play uptempo styles of play," Wayne Country Day boys' head coach Terry Jones said. "We have sought to play in and prepare better for every game. As the guys have begun to trust the system and philosophies for our style of play, success has become easier and more enjoyable as every player, despite statistics, understands and performs his role."

On the girls side of the bracket, the Chargers are looking forward to the challenge of playing back-to-back nights against quality competition.

"Our girls are really excited about playing in, and hosting a holiday (classic)," Wayne Country Day girls head coach Eric Perry said. "Fayetteville Christian and Cape Fear are both very strong teams so it should be exciting."

The No. 2 state-ranked Chargers have made the transition from being a zone defense team to a man-to-man style thus far in the season. A change that they want to showcasing over the two-day event.

"Cape Fear came up to our last game and scouted us out," Perry said. "They know what we have and we don't know much about them. That makes the defense even more important."

Wayne Country Day carries a 10-1 overall record into the Christmas Classic.
