After beginning the week without a win, the Charles B. Aycock varsity girls' basketball team recorded its second victory in three days with a dominating 59-32 conquest of Rosewood on Thursday evening.

The Golden Falcons jumped out to an 18-3 lead after one quarter and extended their advantage to 39-20 after three quarters.

Ivy Hartzell finished with a game-high 17 points for Aycock (2-10 overall) and Camille Williams had 15. Imari Howell added nine points. Brooke Bell provided eight and Courtney Sheeks supplied six.

"We're very proud of the girls' efforts tonight," said Golden Falcons head coach Carrie Reynell. "They made some much-needed offensive adjustments from last night's game. It's a difficult thing to do when you have a young team and you don't have any time in between games to practice.

"We did a much better job of driving to the basket, looking for the open girl, and taking good shots which was something we struggled with the night before at North Johnston. It's always good getting a win going into Christmas break."

Paige Babb, Christina Smith and Angelica Knight each had five points for the Eagles.

The Golden Falcons host North Lenoir on Jan. 2. Rosewood visits Aycock on Jan. 6.

Cougars stumble

ROCKY MOUNT -- Dyonna Battle scored a game-high 21 points to lead Rocky Mount past Goldsboro 68-43 on Thursday evening.

Victoria Williams paced the Cougars with 15 points. Zeara McDuffie had 12 and Millicent Kornegay pitched in seven.

PHS earns win

PRINCETON -- Princeton outscored Louisburg 32-16 after halftime and earned a 53-29, non-conference on Wednesday evening.

Ashley Braswell led the way with 12 points and eight rebounds, Rebecca Harlan and Amber Wood each added eight and Tylan George provided seven points and six boards.

Jill Whitley had six points and Harlan pulled down seven rebounds.

Boys' basketball

Mabry's night spoiled

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rocky Mount junior Tashawn Mabry scored 35 points and moved ahead of former NBA great Buck Williams on the school's all-time scoring list, but Goldsboro escaped with an 89-87 non-conference victory on Thursday night.

Demetrio Irby scored a team-high 23 points for the Cougars, while Resean Brewington had 22 and Donald Lewis added 13. Tyrelle Jackson finished with 12 points and Devonte White chipped in nine.

Mabry pulled down 14 rebounds and handed out four assists for the Gryphons. He now has 1,047 points, second-most in the school's illustrious basketball history.

Goldsboro (8-5 overall) will compete in the Roanoke Christmas Tournament in Robersonville on Dec. 29-30.

Rebels defeated

LEJEUNE -- North Duplin fell behind 23-5 after one quarter and never recovered in a 72-45, non-conference loss at Camp Lejeune on Thursday evening.

Devin Oliver paced the Rebels with 12 points and Marcus Kornegay had 10. Quentin Graham scored nine points and Blake King pitched in seven.

C.J. Crenshaw led Lejeune with 21 points.

North Duplin (0-6 overall) visits Union on Dec. 30.

JV sports

* Girls' basketball: C.B. Aycock 36, Rosewood 17 -- Natana Martin scored 16 points for Aycock and Tyecha Newsome and Kelby Dumond each added six. The Golden Falcons (3-2 overall) host North Lenoir on Jan. 2.

* Boys' basketball: C.B. Aycock 57, Rosewood 52 (OT) -- Aycock was led by Shepard Whitfield's 32 points and Rendall Fulghum pitched in 10 points and six assists. The Golden Falcons (5-5 overall) play host to North Lenoir on Jan. 2.

Middle schools

* Girls' basketball: Rosewood 34, Grantham 8 -- The Eagles improved to 4-2 on the season behind 15 points from Logan Biel. Teammate Holly Heath added 11 points in the win.

* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 35, Mount Olive 9 -- Jenna Van Horn led Norwayne (5-1 overall, 2-1) with 14 points and Meredith Burroughs had five. Naja Muhammed scored five points for Mount Olive.

* Boys' basketball: Greenwood 53, Brogden 33 -- Jaelen Johnson scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Kerron Howell had nine points and 16 rebounds for Greenwood (6-0 overall, 3-0 WCMSAC Division II). Jaelen Spruill and Julius Murphy each added 10 points.
