Eastern Wayne shook off a slow start and picked up a 42-22 non-conference victory over visiting Wilmington Laney on Monday evening.

The Warriors (2-4 overall) outscored the Buccaneers 37-17 over the final three quarters. Tiarra McIntyre scored a game-high 16 points and Danielle Daniel finished with eight. Lindsey Frederick added five points.

Kabrina Truesdale led Laney with eight points.

Eastern Wayne entertains North Lenoir tonight.

Chargers cruise past Rosewood

Rosewood's Christina Bruton scored the game's first basket against Wayne Country Day on Monday evening.

The Eagles couldn't find the mark after that.

Wayne Country Day reeled off 25 consecutive points after Bruton's score and rolled to a 64-14, non-conference victory. The Chargers, ranked No. 2 in the latest N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, swept the regular-season series from Rosewood.

"Coming off Friday's game that was a victory, we were not satisfied with our focus for the whole game," said second-year WCDS coach Eric Perry. "Before this game I could tell they were focused. They're beginning to take self-ownership in this team and not depend on me and Coach (Tyler) Fike all the time.

"They are beginning to buy into what we do every day in practice and in the games."

The Chargers limited the Eagles to just three field goals in a 24-minute span. Rosewood committed 42 turnovers and wound up with just six field goals for the game.

Senior Bridgette Briggs paced Wayne Country Day's offensive attack with a game-high 16 points. Catherine Ford added 12, while Mack Thompson pumped in11 points. Kim Martell contributed 10 points.

"We had a balanced attack and that's what we want every game," said Perry, whose team recorded 18 assists on 28 made field goals.

Eighth-grader Sarah Best came off the bench to provide seven assists and pick Rosewood for five steals. Overall, the Chargers collected 22 steals as a team.

Bruton and Shantal Johnson led Rosewood (2-6) with four points apiece.

JV sports

* Girls' basketball: Rosewood 32, North Lenoir 27 (OT) -- Megann Tyndall's steal and layup sealed the Eagles' non-conference victory Monday evening. Chelsea Mercer and Kerri Jo Gurley led Rosewood's offense with eight and seven points, respectively. The Eagles (2-3 overall) carry a two-game win streak into today's home game against archrival Princeton.

Middle schools

* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 28, Eastern Wayne 21 -- The Cobras (4-1 overall) handed the Warriors there first loss of the season behind nine points from Quanika Artis. Jenna Van Horn added six points in the victory. Eastern Wayne was led by Divonnie Powell's 10-point outburst.
