Ki'Ana Williams poured in a game-high 23 points and the Goldsboro girls basketball team rolled past county rival Southern Wayne 70-53 on Thursday evening.

Williams buried three 3-pointers in the first quarter. Millicent Kornegay (11 points, 12 rebounds) and Akeyanna Whitler established an early defensive presence in the paint and kept the Saints offense in check.

The Cougars (1-1 overall) led 36-23 at halftime.

Goldsboro forced 19 turnovers and all five starters scored in double figures.

Lynnesha Leonard paced the Saints (1-3) with 16 points. Kayla Powell added eight points, while Octavia Lee scored seven.

Chargers stay unbeaten

Wayne Country Day improved to 4-0 with an 83-15 rout of Epiphany on Thursday evening.

Bridgette Briggs scored 25 points and Brooke Norris finished with 21. Catherine Ford contributed nine points and Sarah Best had eight.

The Chargers travel to Waccamaw tonight.

Wrestling

Dawgs top Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Princeton notched seven pins and rolled past Spring Creek on the wrestling mat Wednesday evening.

"(Our) younger wrestlers stepped up to give us some much-needed victories in the middle classes," said Dawgs head coach Terry Braswell. "(I was) very pleased with the overall effort."

David Waddell (125 pounds), B.J. Creech (145), Patrick Woodard (152), Blake Wagner (160), Tyler Baker (171), Willie Sheffield (189) and heavyweight Trevor Langdon (215) each pinned their respective opponent.

Fellow Bulldawg Matt Evans earned a 13-8 decision at 112 pounds, while Kolton Wann (130) and Justin Collier (135) each drew a forfeit. Mike Maus (140) won by injury default.

Paul Richter and Hernandez each received a forfeit.

Princeton (1-1 overall) returns to action Saturday in the 9th annual Falcon Invitational at Charles B. Aycock. First-round matches begin at 9 a.m.

Boys' basketball

PHS earns first win

WILSON -- Princeton picked up its first win of the season by knocking off the Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf 72-62 on Thursday evening.

Andre Nixon led the Bulldogs with 20 points and 16 rebounds. T.J. Wilson added 17 points, David Gurganus chipped in nine points and 10 assists and Dylan Myers finished with six points.

School for the Deaf's Josh Hines led all scorers with 32 points.

Princeton (1-1 overall) plays host to Raleigh Charter on Tuesday.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Greenwood 46, Spring Creek 37 -- Kerron Howell paced the T-birds with a double-double -- 12 points, 10 rebounds. Teammates Quaviis Holloman (11 points, three assists) and Jaelen Johnson (8 points, 10 rebounds, three assists) also contributed to the win. Demarion Henderson pumped in a game-high 25 points for Spring Creek. Greenwood (2-0 overall) travels to Eastern Wayne on Monday.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 34, Epiphany 7 -- Zach Syverson led the Chargers with 12 points. Cody Neal provided seven points. Zach Brewer-Kirby and Luke Bryan scored four points apiece. The Chargers (2-0 overall) entertain St. Mary's on Monday.

* Girls' basketball: Eastern Wayne 43, Brogden 9 -- Co-captains Kaceia Exum and Divonnie Powell collected 15 and 11 points, respectively, for the Warriors. Elondia Grant and Hannah Smith scored six points apiece. Lameshia Stukes led the Rams with four points. Eastern Wayne (2-0 overall) plays host to Greenwood on Monday.
