PIKEVILLE -- One stroke was all that separated Wilson Hunt and Southern Wayne when the final scores were counted at the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference golf meet at Lane Tree Golf Club on Monday.
The Warriors escaped with a 147-148 victory, and shaved the Saints' overall lead from seven strokes to six with two tournaments remaining.
"I think if we maintain our consistency and Hunt plays about the same as they have, we will be fine," said Saints head coach Michael Wiggs. "We get to play at Eastern Wayne and then in the conference championship match at Wedgewood which should be in our favor."
The Saints were paced by Taylor Scott's round of 43. Taylor Reaves added a 49 and Darian Edwards fired a 56.
"I know Taylor (Reaves) was not happy with how she played today, but it was a tough day for a lot of players," said Wiggs. "This team has three players that are capable of shooting between 40-50, and that consistency is big in girls golf."
Eastern Wayne finished third in the team scoring with a 161. Jasmine Reeves shot a 41 and captured medalist honors for the fourth consecutive ECC meet.
"Jasmine is such a good player, she helps our other girls as they try to improve," said Eastern Wayne head coach Scott Waller. "The big thing with Jasmine is not over-coaching her, not getting into her head. At this level the last thing you want to do is over-complicate things."
Sydney Stocks (61) and Hannah Grantham (62) rounded out Eastern Wayne's team scoring.
"Golf is a game, where if it's important to you and you practice on your own, you will get better," said Waller. "We have to work on getting better Monday through Friday at practice and turn that into results."
Lauren Larison led Charles B. Aycock with a round of 55. Jennifer Stewart added a round of 68. The Golden Falcons did not register a team score due to the lack of a third player.
The teams return to action Monday at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course.
