Sharks compete at USY meet

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Goldsboro YMCA Sharks swim team recently competed at the 2006 Short Course USY Championships.
Melvin Shipman, Tyler Leggins, Matthew Moulas and Alexander Robinson competed for the boys team.
Carrigan Chastain, Bailey Upchurch along with Jean Turlington, who is from the satellite team in Clinton, competed for the girls. In addition to the older swimmers, one of the younger Sharks was also competing, Matthew Lane (9), who competed in the individual events of 50 Free and 50 breast.
The boy's relay team comprised of Shipman, Robinson, Moulas and Leggins came home with three medals, including gold in the 400 medley. The relay team also achieved silver in the 200 medley and bronze in the 400 freestyle.
Their times were team records for the relay events.
In addition to the relays, Leggins (breaststroke), Robinson (400 IM) and Shipman (backstroke), also medaled and are nearing their YMCA-Nationals qualifying times.
The girls swam strong in individual events and improved their times in every swim. Upchurch ended the weekend taking her backstroke to the finals and medaling in the same, while Chastain bettered her time in all seven of her events including qualifying for the finals in the 100 backstroke. Turlington bettered her times in her events as well.
Overall the Sharks -- comprised of only eight swimmers and coached by Alex Black -- ended the meet in 16th place out of 47 teams.
