James M. Whitman, 77, Mount Olive area resident, passed away early Friday morning, Sept. 7, at Kitty Askins Hospice House.

Funeral will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with the Rev. Barry Stallings officiating, with burial to follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. At other times, friends may come to the home of Doug & Marie McArthur on North Church St.

Before retirement, James had been employed with Kemp Furniture Co. He was a member of Mount Olive Free Will Baptist Church and the Society of the Woodmen of the World. In his retirement years, he was a frequent participant in the senior citizens activities at the Mount Olive Senior Center.

He is survived by his lady-friend, Ann Marie Wood, of Mount Olive; a step-daughter, Doris M. Heffner of Ayden; two step-sons and daughters-in-law, Ray Douglas “Doug” and Marie McArthur, and William Earl and Jenny McArthur, all of Mount Olive; another daughter-in-law, Kim McArthur, of Mount Olive; five sisters, Willie Myrtle Williams of Kenansville, Penny Smith and husband, Wayne, of Snow Hill, Ernestine Best of Dudley, Mary Louise Holmes of Shallotte, and Virginia Creech of Mount Olive; a brother, Jesse Claude Whitman of New Bern; eight grandchildren, Kenneth McArthur and wife, Rhonda, Douglas McArthur and wife, Tiffany, Christy M. Turner and husband, Brad, Timothy McArthur and wife, Michelle, Hannah M. Moore and husband, Carley, Bobby McArthur and wife, Krystal, Donna H. Delong and husband, Barry, and Daniel Heffner and wife, Toni; eight great-grandchildren, Jimmy, Bryson, and Noah McArthur, Lillie Turner, Riley Heffner, and Medko, Tam, and Kali Delong.

Those preceding him in death include his wife, Elsie Mae King McArthur Whitman; a step-son, Henry Burrell McArthur; parents, Jeffrey Jack “Jim” Whitman and Penny Bell Whitman; a sister, Jean Whitfield; brothers, Jesse Ray Whitman and Hubert Ray Whitman, and an infant brother.
