GERRY N. PHELPS

Gerry Norman Phelps Sr., 81, passed away Saturday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Born in Hanover, N.H., he was the son of the late Earl Edward Phelps and Clara Kibbie Phelps.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Phelps, and sister, Louise Milne.

A member of Providence United Methodist Church, Gerry was retired from the United States Navy after 22 years of service.

He was a member of American Legion Post 11, Veterans of Foreign Wars Goldsboro Post 2615, Marine Corps League Waynesborough Detachment 1350, Fleet Reserve Association Tar River Branch 204, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 892 and the Disabled American Veterans Wayne Chapter 45.

A service to celebrate Gerry's life will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James Huskins officiating.

Gerry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jeanne Phelps; a son, Gerry (Christina) Phelps Jr.; a daughter, Lisa Phelps; a sister, Susan Lemay; and four grandchildren, Gerry Phelps III, Daniel Phelps, Matthew Phelps and Thomas Phelps.

The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that contributions be made in Gerry's honor to the Wayne County Veterans and Patriots Coalition to support the Memorial Day Flag and Wreaths Across America programs, Wayne County Veterans and Patriots Coalition Inc., Brian Volk, treasurer, 2001D E.
