Katherine Harrell Flynn, 80, died the morning of Jan. 19, 2018, in Warminster, Pa., from a stroke complicated by Parkinson's disease
Born July 6, 1937, in Goldsboro, N.C., she was the eldest child of Dr. Leon Jackson Harrell and Florence Hooks Harrell.
She graduated from Goldsboro High School, the University of North Carolina Women's College and Long Island University of Southampton, N.Y.
In 1989, she married Henry Mayo Flynn Jr., architect, and settled in Goldsboro, N.C.
She taught kindergarten at St. Francis Church, and was the director of Christian education at St. Paul United Methodist Church.
In 1983, the Flynns moved to Southampton, N.Y., where Mr. Flynn established his architecture firm on Main Street.
In 1989, at 53 years old, she received her Masters of Science degree from Long Island University of Southampton, N.Y., and became a well-regarded kindergarten teacher at Southampton Elementary, where she taught for 12 years.
Upon retirement, she and her husband divided their time between Maine and North Carolina.
Katherine's bright smile and open demeanor made her a memorable presence.
She loved to garden, and had a great sense of humor.
She will be deeply missed by those who had the great fortune to know her well.
She is survived by her husband, Henry Mayo Flynn Jr. of Warminster, Pa.; her daughter, Katherine "Kit" Flynn, of Portland, Maine; her son, Henry "Hank" Mayo Flynn III and his wife, Jennifer Flynn, of Holland, Pa.; her three beautiful grandsons, Henry IV, Daniel and Harrell; her youngest son, Harrell McKay Flynn also of Holland, Pa.; her brother, Toby Hooks Harrell and his wife, Cheryl, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; her sister-in-law, Patricia Harris Harrell of Gainesville, Ga.; as well as her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Leon Jackson "Jack" Harrell Jr.
A celebration of Katherine's life will be held at the family home on Parker Pond in Mount Vernon, Maine, July 14, 2018.
