CAROL WELLS HESTER

Nov. 1, 1921-Jan. 22, 2018

Carol Wells Hester, Wilson, N.C., died peacefully at home Jan. 22, 2018, after a brief illness.

She was born in Duplin County Nov. 1, 1921, to the late Margaret McMillan Wells and Rupert Ward Wells.

Her favorite song in the world was "Clair du lune," and the poem that inspired it began with the "soul is a delicate landscape."

That was our Gran: Gentle, kind and known by all for her cheerful disposition, eternal optimism and beautiful silver hair. She never tolerated unkindness. Because of Carol, her family learned the power of forgiveness and the meaning of loyalty.

Carol graduated from Bessemer High School in Greensboro and Women's College in 1940.

March 25, 1944, she married "Mack" Hester, and together they raised five sons, the loves of her life.

Later she attended Salem College and Atlantic Christian College.

Carol and Mack proudly helped found Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wendell in 1954.

Later, she joined First Presbyterian Church of Goldsboro, and in 2008, she joined First Presbyterian Church in Wilson.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph M. Hester, M.D.; brothers, Rupert W. Wells, Norman E. Wells, John M. Wells and George E. Wells; and beloved sister, Sally Wells Shelton.

She was also preceded in death by grandson, Joshua Douglas Cotton, and great-grandson, Easton James DeVore.

Carol is survived by sons, Joseph M. Hester Jr. and wife, Betsy, Robert W. Hester and wife, Dorothy, James E. Hester and wife, Laura, Rupert E. Hester and William M. Hester; grandchildren, Anna Hester Sampson, Robert Wells Hester Jr., Allison Hester DeVore and husband, Steven, Joseph Robert Hester and wife, Kennan, Margaret Hester Cromer and husband, Bryan, William M. Hester Jr. and Georgia Fox Hester; great-grandchildren, Emma Caroline Sampson and Bryson McMurray Cromer; and brother, Hendricks Worth Wells and wife, Martha.

She also leaves behind many others for whom she was grateful: Gene and Katherine Hester; many nieces and nephews; her friends at The Landing of Wilson; and her very special friend, Bett, without whom her life would have been less rich.

The family gratefully acknowledges the many devoted doctors and nurses of 7th floor west, Rex Hospital, and Leo Bordatto with Amedysis Hospice, all who cared for her through her brief illness.

A private service, officiated by Tom Watkins, will be Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church in Wilson. Carol will be interred beside "Mack" in the columbarium at First Presbyterian Church of Goldsboro.

Arrangements are by Seymour Funeral Home Goldsboro, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, make donations to Amedysis Hospice, 220 New Fidelity Court, Garner, N.C., 27529.
