FREDERICK C. SMITH

Frederick Carlyle "Carlie" Smith, 88, of Asheboro, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Universal Healthcare in Ramseur.

Graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Randolph Memorial Park, with Chaplain Tim Pheagin officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

Born Aug. 17, 1928 in Durham County, N.C., Mr. Smith was the son of the late O.C. and Catherine Smith. He graduated from Washington High School in Kansas City, Kan., and later from William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.

Mr. Smith was retired from N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program. He was a member of West Bend United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II.

Mr. Smith was a teacher at Southern High School in Durham, where he also coached football and baseball. He was a Boy Scout leader and volunteered with many organizations. Also, a Mason and a past member of the Scottish Rite and the Oasis Shriners. Mr. Smith was a member of Asheboro Lodge # 699 and was a past member of Andrew Jackson Lodge #576 in Salisbury and Balfour Lodge #188 in Asheboro.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Jane Smith; children, Stephen Smith and wife, Kim, of Orlando, Fla., Marcas Smith and wife, Lea, of San Antonio, Texas, and Kim Smith-Nagel and husband, Peter, of Asheboro; grandchildren, Leslie Shevlin and husband, Tim, of Salem, Ore., Mallory Richards and husband, Jo, of Washington, D.C., Devon Smith and Zachary Smith, both of San Antonio, Texas.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, at Ridge Funeral Home, prior to the service.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Universal Healthcare of Ramseur for the care given to Mr. Smith over the past few years.
