Jesse J. “Buddy” Gurley, 83, Goldsboro, died Thursday at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.
Buddy was born in Wayne County, N.C., on Dec. 29, 1932, to the late Leonard Gurley and Maude Worrell Gurley.
He was a retired truck driver with Made Rite Bakery.
Buddy was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean War.
He was a member of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.
In his spare time, Buddy and his wife, Katie, enjoyed fishing and shrimping at the coast.
He especially enjoyed decorating his yard for Christmas.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry Teague officiating with burial to follow in Wayne Memorial Park.
Buddy is survived by his wife, Katie Wiggs Gurley; son, Robert Gurley of Goldsboro; sister, Marlene Taylor and husband, Bobby, of LaGrange; brother, Anthony Gurley and wife, Rebecca, of Kernersville; and his grandchildren, Jennifer Gurley Harvey and Jaime Gurley, both of Tennessee.
He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Jaylee Harvey, Jenna Kate Harvey, Jordyn Harvey and Blayne Gurley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Edward “Eddie” Gurley and his sisters, Emma Lee Gurley Pittman, Joyce Gurley Daw and Evelyn Carol Gurley.
Although flowers are welcome, the family request memorials be made to Woods Grove PFWB Church, 4009 Central Heights Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
