Died Jan. 28, 2016

Harvey W. Turnage Jr., Greenville, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, after battling pulmonary fibrosis.

He was the son of the late Mable Galloway Turnage and Harvey William Turnage.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Hughes Turnage, of 54 years.

He is survived by his beloved second wife, Janice Whitaker Turnage; his daughter, Patricia Calloway and husband, Chip; and his son, Harvey William Turnage III.

Harvey has two wonderful grandsons, Christopher and his wife, Emily, and their adorable children, Parrish, Evie and Caroline, and Charles and his wife, Madison.

He is also survived by his dearly loved sister, Betty Lou Howard; her daughter, Cindy Canning and husband, Tim; and his devoted cousin, James Galloway Long and his wife, Bess; plus many adored nieces and nephews.

Also surviving is Janice’s daughter, Denise Askew, and her husband, Lee; their son, Whitaker and his wife, Haley, who have two darling daughters, Mary Chandler and Leighton.

Harvey was a graduate of Fishburne Military School and the University of North Carolina with a B.S. in commerce.

During college he enlisted in the Marine Corps and proudly served in the Marianna Islands, the Philippines and Northern China.

After an honorable discharge he returned to Chapel Hill to complete his education and married Patricia Hughes.

They moved to Atlanta where he was vice president of Southern Cross Industries.

His family attended First Christian Church where he and Pat taught Sunday school and served on the board of deacons.

Harvey was a member of the Jaycees, the Commerce Club, Lions Club and was on the committee that formed the first Peach Bowl.

He played golf at Atlanta Country Club and Peachtree Golf Club where he met Bobby Jones, a meeting he valued the rest of his life.

Harvey enjoyed fishing with old friends in Florida and N.C., but golf was his passion.

He always said he loved golf, but did not feel golf always loved him in return.

Harvey and Pat moved to Goldsboro, N.C., in 1970, where he was associated with Kemp Industries and continued his career in sales until his retirement in 1989.

He continued living in Goldsboro after the death of his wife.

Harvey began traveling and visiting family and friends and eventually met Janice Whitaker Turnage through his sister.

They were married in 2002 and resided in Greenville.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel.

Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home.

The family thanks hospice and especially the loving care by Harvey’s care companion, Janet Keel.
