MYRTLE STANCILL STRICKLAND

Myrtle Stancill Strickland, 85, Fremont, passed peacefully into that far and better life with her Lord and savior Saturday, May 10, 2014.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Fremont United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. -- visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. Internment immediately following the ceremony at Elmwood Cemetery.

Myrtle was born in Pitt County March 19, 1929. She was the 12th of 13 children born to the late Wiley Nathan Stancill and Malissa Roebuck House Stancill.

Myrtle grew up on the family farm in the Garnerville community.

She graduated from Chicod High School, and later received her Bachelor of Science degree in education from East Carolina University.

Myrtle started her teaching career in 1950 in South Carolina before moving with her husband, Arnold, and their two children, Tim and Sharon, to Fremont in 1959.

She taught at Rosewood School for seven years before transferring to Fremont School in 1966. She stayed there until her retirement in 1994.

She always enjoyed connecting with students she had taught through the years. She was deeply honored and humbled to have been selected as teacher of the year 1991/1992 for Fremont Elementary.

Myrtle was a proud member of IOTA Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She was a member of Fremont United Methodist Church.

The life she lived was one of grace and Christian love. She will be remembered by her sweet smile and gentle ways.

Myrtle is survived by her daughter, Sharon/Cleve Thompson of Fremont; her grandson, Scott/Kristen Thompson of Raleigh; and a great-grandchild, Charlotte Mae Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold G. Strickland; her son, Tim Strickland; and grandson, Jason Thompson.

Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Mildred Moore, Melba Reel, Mary Elizabeth "Sissy" Nelson and Christine "Teenie" Whitford, and her brothers, Wiley Nathan Stancill Jr., Joseph Stancill, Linwood Stancill, Walter Stancill, Wilbert Stancill, Willie Stancill, Vernon House and Thomas House.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Fremont United Methodist Church, 106 N. Sycamore St., Fremont, N.C., 27830.

The family is in the care of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont.
