LAGRANGE -- Mr. Preston "Pres" Parks Pate, 88, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at his residence.
A native of Greene County, Pres was born March 20, 1925, the son of Berry W. and Laura Mewborn Pate.
Following service in the United States Navy during World War II, Press returned to Greene County and began a long and distinguished career with Greene County Soil Conservation Service.
He was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church and American Legion Shirley Hill Post 94, and a retired member of Snow Hill Fire Department.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service, with Dr. Mallie Hinnant officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Snow Hill Cemetery.
Pres is survived by his wife of 70 years, Geraldine Joyner Pate; son, Preston Pate Jr. and wife, Pat, of Morehead City; daughter, Hilda Pate Barrow of Greenville; grandchildren, Melissa Culbreth and husband, Jason, of Raleigh, Andy Barrow and wife, Carie, of Greensboro, Randy Barrow and wife, Jenny, of Garner, Megan Myrick and husband, David, of Fayetteville and Bryan Pate and wife, Audrey, of Lexington Park, Md.; and great-grandchildren, Adam Barrow, Jonathan Barrow, James Barrow, Olivia Myrick, Bryce Pate and Parker Pate.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence, 1945 Titus Mewborn Road.
