CONYERS, Ga. -- Mr. Robert Ray "Bob" VanDevender passed away Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at the age of 80.
Bob was born in Pocahontas County, W.Va., Nov. 21, 1932.
He spent his childhood in Covington, Va., attended Covington High School and joined the United States Navy at the age of 18.
He served aboard the USS Orleck during the Korean War from 1951 through 1954.
After returning home, he met and married Janice Bostic in 1956.
Bob went to work with Hercules Inc., and was transferred to Raleigh, N.C., where he resided until he was transferred to Conyers, Ga. He made Conyers his home for the last 31 years.
After retiring from Hercules with 35 years of service, Bob enjoyed his hobby of gardening until illness made it difficult to continue.
Bob attended Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Hazel Simmons VanDevender, and brother, Gaines "Jack" VanDevender.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Bostic VanDevender of Conyers; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Peggy VanDevender of Pikeville, Va.; daughter, Brenda Arrington of Conyers; brother, Don and wife, Carol VanDevender, of Hardy, Va.; sister, Louisa Vest of Bedford, Va.; granddaughters, Danielle Bradford of Huntersville, N.C., and Brittany Arrington and Kayla Arrington both of Conyers; and two great-grandchildren, Baylie and Robbie Kerley of Huntersville, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Scot Ward's Green Meadow chapel, with the Rev. Mike Nickolich officiating. Interment will follow at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens.
Family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
