Charles Wayne Shumate, 83, Goldsboro, died Tuesday morning at his residence.

Born in Goldsboro, he was the son of the late Harry Shumate and Pattie Snow Merriman Shumate, and brother of the late Harry Shumate Jr., Olivia Matthews and Dorothy Valentino.

He graduated from Goldsboro High School, where his passion for sports helped him excel in football, as the varsity left-handed quarterback, as a basketball player and as a swimmer.

After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Navy as a corpsman, and he served during the Korean Conflict.

He then joined the Navy Reserves, and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until he was recalled to active service in the United States Navy. He loved everything about his Carolina blue heaven.

Prior to retirement, he was a partner and vice president in Shumate Funeral Home with his family.

A service to celebrate his life will be held by the graveside Thursday at 11 a.m. at Willowdale Cemetery, with the Rev. Thomas Mclendon officiating.

Family members will greet friends at the grave.

Charles is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Spanos Shumate; his five children, Thomas Wayne Shumate, Debra Ann and husband, Bob Warren, Susan Gail and husband, Jimmy Sharpe, Judith Fay Herlihy and Wright Merriman and wife, Rhonda Shumate; eight grandchildren, Greg and wife, Ashley Warren, Michael and wife, Aly Warren, Heather Sharpe, Stephanie Sharpe, Ryan Sharpe, Lillie Herlihy, Joseph Herlihy and Amber Shumate; brother, Edwin Shumate; numerous nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law, Chris Spanos,

He was a wonderful and loving husband, daddy, granddaddy and friend.

The family would like to thank his doctors, Dr. Dugom, Dr. Attiah, Dr. Danieli and Dr. Metcalf; the staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital for the help given to Charles during his sickness and his special nurse, Jean Barwick, and Home Health and Hospice.
