SUSAN B. BRITT
Died May 5, 2013
Susan Bennett Britt passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.
Susan was a native of Alabama and received her Bachelor of Science degree, magna cum laude, in home economics education from Samford Univeristy in Birmingham. The following year, she received her Master of Science degree in textiles, clothing and merchandising from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
She taught school in these subject areas at the college and secondary levels for 36 years in Alabama.
In 1998, she and her husband, Del, moved to North Carolina to be near family during their retirement years.
She joined Evergreen Garden Club in 2002, and entered her first flower show eight weeks later. She won the "Best in Show" Award, which was the top award in the design division offered in that show.
That, and her background in teaching the elements and principles of design, led to recruitment into the Flower Show Schools Program of National Garden Club to become an accredited flower show judge, which she did in 2006. She met many garden club members across North Carolina during that time.
Susan was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
She served as president of Evergreen Garden Club at Walnut Creek, president of the Goldsboro Council of Garden Club, state recording secretary of The Garden Club of North Carolina, chairman of the Judges Council Symposium in 2008 and other positions of leadership on various committees of Garden Club of North Carolina.
She was a life member of National Garden Club, life member of South Atlantic Region and a life member of The Garden Club of North Carolina Inc.
Susan was also a member of Goldsboro Woman's Club, Alpha Delta Kappa, an international teacher's sorority, The Nature Conservancy, the Mental Health Association of Wayne County and the Humane Society of the United States.
She enjoyed growing and arranging flowers, cooking and entertaining at home, sewing, traveling and the companionship of Del and their cocker spaniel, Buckingham.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at 2 p.m. in Devotional Gardens in Warsaw, N.C.
The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.
Susan is survived by her husband, Del Britt; brother, Calvin Brooks Bennett and wife, Sally Starr Bennett; nephews, Calvin Brooks "Tripp" Bennett III and Stephen Buchanan Bennett; and great-nephews, Alexander "Brooks" Bennett and William Christian "Will" Bennett.
