PIKEVILLE -- Dorothy Mae Best, 80, of Bartlett Road passed away Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Home-going services will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.
Ms. Best was born in Wayne County on Dec. 7, 1931. She was a member of Fremont Holiness Church and the Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by three sons, Edward Earl Jones and wife, Sarah, of Pikeville, Bobby Dwight Jones of Pikeville and Donnie Ray Best Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Goldsboro; a daughter-in-law, Laura Jones of Pikeville; two half-brothers, Johnny Ray Smith and wife, Nell, of Mount Olive and George Wade Smith and wife, Ada Wiggs, of Pikeville; two sisters, Gladys Irene Tilton of Belfast and Ava Faye Olson and husband, Bob, of Fayetteville; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one-great-great-grandchild.
Ms. Best was preceded in death by her father, William Henry Smith; her mother who raised her, Mable Glenn Smith; a son, David Wayne Jones; a brother, Carl William; and two sisters, Annie Rose Lane and Daisy Owens.
Although flowers are welcome, memorial contributions may be directed to Fremont Holiness Church.
