Ruth Gurley Hawkins, 84, went to be with her Lord Sunday at the Brian Center surrounded by her family.

Ruth was born in Wayne County May 1, 1928, to the late Floyd Gurley and Lillie Roberts Gurley. She was married for 57 years to W. Carson Hawkins, who preceded her in death March 15, 2008.

Ruth retired from Southern Bell Telephone Co. after 38 years of service, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, which was the former Pilot Club of Goldsboro.

Ruth was a godly woman who loved the Lord and her family, and set an example for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that will lead them all their lives.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 23, 2012, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by her funeral service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dann Patrick officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Ruth is survived by her sons, Donald C. Hawkins and wife, Vickie, of Goldsboro and Kenneth F. Hawkins and wife, Kathy, of Goldsboro; her grandchildren, Beth Hawkins Spence and husband, William, and Lesley Hawkins Voeller and husband, Brian; and her great-grandchildren, Dail Spence, Karsen Spence, Cooper Voeller, Hayden Voeller and Bailey Voeller.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Jean G. Barnette, and brother, E.C. Gurley.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Faith Free Will Baptist Church, 1200 W. Grantham St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.

Ruth's family would like to acknowledge the staff at The Pines and the Brian Center, who had a profound impact on the quality of Ruth's life in recent years.

Special thanks goes to her caregivers, especially Staris Vick and her great niece, Rhonda Bundy. Their incredible wisdom and support sustained Ruth during her years of declining health. May God bless each of you in a very special way.
