GREENVILLE -- Mr. Alton Jackson Ward Jr., 77, died Wednesday, May 16, 2012.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Johnny Branch officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Alton, son of the late Alton J. and Bernice Sylivant Ward of Goldsboro, attended Goldsboro city schools and attended High Point College.

He married the former Martha Wallace, also of Goldsboro.

He was employed and instrumental in the beginning of UNC-TV programming at WC-UNC of Greensboro.

Alton came to Greenville in 1960 to join the family business, Ward Vending Co., and continued with the company after it was sold to Servomation Corp.

Since his retirement he had been an accomplished and avid golfer.

Al was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.

He was a past member of Brook Valley Country Club, where he served on the board of directors for several years, as well as the Greenville Country Club. He was also active in the North Carolina Automatic Merchandising Association, serving two terms on the board of directors.

Al was preceded in death by his son, Alton Jackson Ward III, and grandson, Jackson Banks McDermott.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by his daughter, Leslie Wallace Ward; son, Samuel Adams Ward; grandchildren, Elizabeth Boviall Ward and Hunter Cole Harrington all of Greenville; sister, Mary Lou Ward; and special family member, George F. Whitfield both of Goldsboro.
