MANETTA JANE COX WOOTEN STOVALL

Manetta Jane Cox Wooten Stovall was born Nov. 7, 1926, in Goldsboro to George Washington and Lillie Davis Cox. She went to be with the Lord April 30, 2012, at approximately 10:15 p.m.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lillie, and her foster parents, Russell and Gertrude Wooten.

Manetta joined St. Andrew's Episcopal Church at an early age, and maintained the longest active membership in the church's history.

She attended Goldsboro city schools, and graduated from Dillard High School in 1944. Manetta received her bachelor's degree in education from Virginia State University in 1948.

She started her teaching career in Greenville, and then moved to Wayne County and taught for a total of 33 years.

While in Greenville, she met the love of her life, Orlando Richard Stovall Jr. They were married March 12, 1950, and maintained this union for 62 years.

As a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, she was a longtime member of the vestry board, and served in various other capacities. She headed the committee to build the present St. Andrew's Episcopal church of Goldsboro located at 901 Harris St.

Manetta was a charter member of Goldsboro Continental Society Inc., and longtime member and president of the Old North State Dental Auxiliary. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., a life member of the NAACP and a member of First African Baptist Church chancellor choir and Eleanor Harris Chorale.

She was chairperson of the Alphabets, a support group of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and chairman for Miss Black Teenage World.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband Orlando Stovall Jr.; an adopted sister, Willie May "Pety" Hicks; four children, Dr. Sandra M. Stovall, Yvonne S. Rouse, Dr. Orlando "Rick" Stovall III (Vanessa) and Anthony R. Stovall; adopted son, the Rev. Marytin Anagbogu of Nigeria; four grandchildren, Ricky Williams, Lilliene M. Umar (Yusif), Dr. Jonelle Stovall and Kimberly Stovall; an adopted granddaughter, Christy Coley; a great-granddaughter, Adisa Umar; two sisters-in-law, Ann Marie Dickens and Doris Stovall; and four goddaughters, Lynn Whitted, Dejuana S. Henderson, Terri Adori-Dy and Maria Logan.

During her illness, she was lovingly attended and cared for in the home by Ruth Russell, Doris Bryant and Betty Artis.

She will be lovingly missed by a host of other relatives and friends.

Arrangements are as follows:

A wake will be held Thursday, May 3, 2012, from 6 to 9 p.m., with a Tribute to Life from 7 to 8 p.m. at First African Baptist Church, 803 Harris S., Goldsboro.

A homegoing celebration will take place Friday, May 4 2012, at noon at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 901 Harris St., Goldsboro, with the Rev. Mary Reese presiding.

Interment will be at Wayne Memorial Park, U.S. 117.

At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence at 304 Bunche Drive.
