GERALDINE "GERRY" ALLEGOOD VINCENT

1927-2011

MEBANE -- Gerry Allegood Vincent passed away from her earthly home into her heavenly home at 6:55 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011.

Gerry was the daughter of the late Claud J. Allegood and Gladys Jordan Allegood, and the wife of William Wallace Vincent, also deceased.

She was a native of Greenville, Pitt County, and received her early education in Greenville City Schools.

While still a student in high school, Gerry began her vocal studies with the music department at East Carolina College (now East Carolina University).

She was active in numerous music department performances, and for many years, was a soloist for civic and church functions in Greenville and throughout eastern North Carolina.

Following graduation from Greenville High School, she entered Salem College as a music major, graduating with a bachelor of music degree in voice.

From Salem College, Gerry came to Alamance County to teach public school music in the Mebane City Schools. For many years she continued to share her music through solo performances in the area. She was a well-known contralto soloist in Handel's "Messiah" at local churches and Duke Chapel.

Later in life Gerry entered the real estate profession, where she was a sales associate with Gallery of Homes, Howard Perry and Walston, and Vogler Realty.

She was a former member of Mebane Music Club, Reviewers Club, Junior Women's Club, the former Green Thumb Garden Club and the Cotillion Club.

She is survived by two much-loved children, daughter, Claudia Vincent Manning, and son, William Murray "Bill" Vincent; two brothers, Carl R. Allegood of Goldsboro and Joseph J. Allegood and wife, Barbara, of Sims; sisters-in-law, Ruth V. Copley and Polly V. Compton of Mebane; former sisters-in-law, Myrtle Allegood of Charlotte and Henrianne Allegood of Wilson; nieces; and nephews.

During her illness, Gerry was blessed by the extraordinary care of Ruth Copley and Bennie Catoe.

The family also wishes to thank Ralph Ely, M.D., Hospice of Alamance/Caswell, Ellen Gaffney, RN, Dale Andrews, and caregivers, Edith Acosta, Cheryl Turner and Toscoa Murray.

The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home, 1308 S. Third St., Mebane, Monday night from 6 to 8 p.m.

A private graveside rite will be held at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, U.S. Route 119 North, Mebane, with the Rev. Tempe Fussell and the Rev. Matthew Randolph officiating.
