A college student was recently named recipient of the 2018 Edythe O. Blanton Volunteer Service Award winner at Cherry Hospital.
Marc Danks, a volunteer since 2016, is currently enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and will graduate in May with a bachelor's degree in social work. He plans to enter the school's master's program in social work later this summer.
Volunteer services at Cherry Hospital annually recognizes an individual or group who have made significant contributions to assist patients and/or staff.
Danks began as a student volunteer through the Golden LEAF Foundation Scholars Leadership Program, said Tanya Rollins, volunteer services director.
After completing the required hours, he remained committed to the role by assisting adolescent patients with educational assignments and working during hospitalwide and community events, she said.
Danks is the 19th recipient of the volunteer service award, first presented in 2000. It is named for the former volunteer services director at Cherry.
