A Wayne County detention center officer has resigned after being charged with felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury.
Jerry Walls, 32, who had been employed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for 11 years, resigned shortly after an April 11 incident.
Sheriff's Maj. Richard Lewis confirmed that Walls resigned shortly after his arrest following an alleged domestic altercation.
Just after midnight on April 11, deputies responded to 202 Janice Drive in Dudley, where they found a 31-year-old female victim suffering from extensive facial injuries.
The victim was taken to Wayne UNC Health Care by Wayne County EMS.
Walls was charged with felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury.
He was booked into the Wayne County Detention Center and held on a secured bond of $2,000.
As a condition of his release, court documents show that Walls was ordered not to have any contact with the victim in the case.
The victim has been released from the hospital, Lewis said.
Walls served as a corporal in the detention center transporting inmates, while earning an annual salary of $35,685.
Walls is scheduled to make his next court appearance on May 21. He has retained attorney Geoff Hulse as his legal counsel in the case.
