Reception recognizes county's student artists

Harley Graham Roberson of Southern Wayne High School is presented a trophy from Wayne County Public Schools' uperintendent Dr. Michael Dunsmore for being selected first place in the superintendent's Holiday Card contest. Each year, a student's work is chosen to illustrate the cover of the holiday card mailed out by the district. WCPS held its annual Visual Arts Award reception earlier this month recognizing student artists in a variety of categories.
Forty-seven student artists were recognized at the Wayne County Public Schools 2017-2018 Visual Arts Awards Reception on Wednesday at Goldsboro High School.
The occasion spotlights art education, something critical in the development of a child, said Tamara Berman-Ishee, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction.
"This annual event allows the district to celebrate the visual arts programs in our schools and bring recognition to those student artists whose talent, passion and creativity have earned them awards in local, regional, state and national art competitions."
Wendy Walker, executive director of the Arts Council of Wayne County was the keynote speaker.
Winners in each category were the following:
Superintendent's Choice Art
Grades K-5:
First place, Yenifer Escalante, Spring Creek Elementary; second place, Llayah Hall, Eastern Wayne Elementary; and third place, Erica McCullen, Brogden Primary.
Grades 6-8:
First place, Daniel Avila-Calderon, Mount Olive Middle; second place, Carrissa Place, Eastern Wayne Middle; and third place, Morgan Thomas, Norwayne Middle.
Grades 9-12:
First place, Celeste Aguirre of Wayne Early/Middle College High and Tiffany Hill of Goldsboro High; second place, Summer Fulghum of Rosewood High and Dalton Rose of Charles B. Aycock High; and third place, Marychelo Juarez of Spring Creek High and Emmie Swindell of Southern Wayne High.
Grades K-6 special recognition:
Jayden Armour of Edgewood Community Developmental School
Grades 9-12 special recognition:
Timothy Kornegay of Southern Wayne.
The Superintendent's Choice Art selections will be displayed for a year along the hallways of the WCPS administrative offices, 2001 E. Royall Ave.

Eighteen students received an honorable mention in the Superintendent's Choice art category, four were runners-up in the holiday card categories, four received an honorable mention in the Scholastic Art Award category, and two were runners-up in the NAACP art contest.
