Goldsboro police are investigating a homicide after 30-year-old Eric Donta Covington was shot and killed Wednesday night.

Patrol officers responded to a report of a person who appeared to be shot lying in the 1100 block of North James Street at about 11:52 p.m.

They found Covington, a Goldsboro resident, lying in the same area near the street. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Wayne County EMS.

Sgt. Bryant Canady, with the Goldsboro Police Department's Investigative Services Bureau, said investigators are working to piece together how the person who called in the incident came across the scene.

Police are also trying to figure out why Covington was in that area of the city.

Canady said the area, while residential, is not very populated and most homes are vacant. The people who do live in the sparsely populated section of the city are mostly elderly, Canady said.

Police have not yet determined what the motive is for Covington's murder.

There are no suspects at this time.

It is the city's 11th homicide of the year. There were 11 homicides in 2016, also.
