The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a tornado watch across several counties including Wayne, effective until 2 a.m.
Strong, gusty winds as high as 45 mph are expected ahead of a line of thunderstorms sweeping east across the state. Rapid pressure falls are producing the high winds and increasing the likelihood for tornadoes.
At 8:50 p.m., N.C. Emergency Management tweeted that early reports of damage have been received from Burke and Caldwell counties.
