A Snow Hill man is facing charges after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend in Eureka Oct. 8.
Joshua McCoy Powell, 36, of 2231 Peanut Road, Snow Hill, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Powell is accused of assaulting his girlfriend while driving, and then assaulting her again on the side of the road, causing serious injuries to her head and face.
Maj. Richard Lewis of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said Powell used his hands during the assault resulting in the victim being badly beaten.
Lewis said Powell stopped the car off the side of the road near the victims residence.
She was able to flee into a wooded area, Lewis said, and make it back to her home.
Some of her family was still awake, and they called 911, he said.
The victim identified her assailant to officers and was taken to Wayne UNC Health Care for treatment.
Powell was arrested Wednesday and put in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond.
