Five area physicians affiliated with Wayne UNC Health Care have been selected to the Best Doctors in America(r) List for 2017-2018, officials from UNC Hospitals announced.
A total of 373 physicians from the system made the list, determined by their peers.
Approximately 4 percent of doctors in the nation earn the prestigious honor, based upon the biennial Best Doctors poll. Each must receive peer consensus of a physician from whom other physicians would seek care, be and verified as having an active medical license free from disqualifying disciplinary actions.
The five local doctors on the list include oncologists Dr. James Atkins and Dr. Samer Kasbari, both from Southeastern Medical Oncology Center; Dr. Stephen Lies from Wayne Women's Clinic; Dr. Charlie Sang Jr. with Brody School of Medicine at ECU, pediatric cardiology section; and Dr. David Tayloe Jr. of Goldsboro Pediatrics.
Those selected to the Best Doctor list do not remain in the database forever, officials said.
The peer review process required re-evaluation by peers in each poll.
Selection is based upon nomination by and then voting consensus from current Best Doctor physicians. There are currently close to 40,000 Best Doctors physicians in the U.S.
