The 91st annual North Carolina Debutante Ball will be held next month in Raleigh, with one young lady from Wayne County among those being formally presented into society.
The tradition dates back to the 1920s, when young gentlemen from Raleigh in the Terpsichorean Club sponsored the annual statewide Debutante Ball. The ball has been held every year since 1923, with the exception of the World War II years.
More than 200 nominators around the state led to the list of young ladies chosen this year in recognition of the contributions their families have made to the economic, cultural, social and civic life of the state.
This year's event will take place the weekend of Sept. 7-9.
The formal presentation will be on Friday evening, Sept. 8, at Meymandi Concert Hall.
Margaret Newman "Margaux" Pope, of Goldsboro is among the latest group of debutantes.
The 19-year-old is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Judson Pope III of Walnut Creek and granddaughter of E.J. Pope Jr. of Mount Olive. A graduate of Wayne Country Day School, she is a rising sophomore at the University of Mississippi.
At the upcoming festivities, her father will serve as her chief marshal, with Connell Loughlin Zelazny from Fredericksburg, Va., as assistant marshal.
